Story
The Civil War is most remembered for the grand battles that have come to define it: Gettysburg, Antietam, Shiloh, among others. However, as bestselling author Patrick K. O’Donnell reveals in The Unvanquished, a vital shadow war raged amid and away from the major battlefields that was in many ways equally consequential to the conflict’s outcome.

Great Must Read for CW fans!
Reviewed: 03-28-25
Didn’t have any dislikes. Thought it was an easy listen/read. I had it in my library unlistened to for nearly a year. Many times I thought @ returning it, just another tale of CW spy’s. But found it a thrilling portrayal of both Federal (the “Jessie Scouts”+others I have been heretofore been unaware of) and Confederate guerrilla bands and it’s Intelligent Service attempting to overthrow Lincoln’s government from both Canada and within the North by political intrigue, bombings, kidnapping, and finally assassination.
I recommended it highly!

Story
With the fall of Vicksburg to Union forces in mid-1863, the Federals began work to extend and consolidate their hold on the lower Mississippi Valley. As a part of this plan, Major General William Tecumseh Sherman set out from Vicksburg on February 3, 1864, with an army of some 25,000 infantry and a battalion of cavalry. They expected to be joined by another Union force moving south from Memphis and supported themselves off the land as they traveled due east across Mississippi.

Sherman’s. Failure to make Mississippi “Howl”
Reviewed: 09-29-22
The author and narrator do excellent work. My issue is the subject matter. Sherman’s ill conceived campaign across the central width of Mississippi to and from Meriden was a strategic failure. The much more valuable port of Mobile AL was easily within the Union grasp. Sherman marching Southeast from Meridian in combination with Banks army from New Orleans, Florida units and Farrigat’s Navy coming from the Gulf coast (which occurred many months later) should have overwhelmed Mobile defenses. Then think of the possibilities. Union forces moving northeast from Mobile to take Atlanta from the South with Grant attacking from Chattanooga in the North. Atlanta taken,The army of Bragg-Johnson could have been squeezed into oblivan, and the thousands of poor Union retches held prisoner at Andersonville freed. The Louisiana-Red River campaign could have taken place later.
But this is not the author’s fault. He does an excellent job in discribing what is an essentially useless campaign, but finding some tactical lessons of significance for Sherman and his method of waging war.

At 5:40 a.m. on July 4, 1954, the mayor of Bay Village, a small suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, received a frantic phone call from his neighbor Dr. Sam Sheppard. The news was too terrible to comprehend: Marilyn, Sam's lovely wife, was dead, her face and torso beaten beyond recognition by an unknown assailant who had knocked Sam unconscious and escaped just before dawn. In the adjacent bedroom, Chip, the Sheppards' seven-year-old son, had slept through the entire ordeal. Almost immediately, the police began to suspect Sam Sheppard.

Not taken the time to really study it. What an eye opener this detailed analysis is. It makes one question whether or. not prosecutors, some rush to judgment police, judges. Jurors And the Press truly care about TRUTH and fairness! And I say this as a now old retired attorney,

Story
In April 1945, the Allies were within sight of the German capital of Berlin. One of the most crucial aspects of the final fighting was that while some Germans gave up and others committed suicide, there were others holding out or trying to escape, and that produced one of the war’s most unusual scenes. The Battle of Castle Itter, an almost completely forgotten sideshow, would find Americans and Germans defending French prisoners against the SS.

The Great Depression was a time of desperation in America - parents struggled to feed their children and unemployment was at a record high. Adding to the lawlessness of the decade, thugs with guns and corrupt law-enforcement officers ran rampant. But amidst this panic, there was one surefire way to make money, one used by criminals and resourceful civilians alike: kidnapping. The Kidnap Years is a thoughtfully reported pause-resister that chronicles the sweep of abductions that afflicted all corners of the country as desperate people were pushed to do the unthinkable.

Landmarks were demolished, houses were torched, suspected resistance fighters were tortured and killed, countless women were raped, and their husbands and children were murdered. American troops had no choice but to battle the enemy, floor by floor and even room by room, through schools, hospitals, and even sports stadiums. In the end, an estimated 100,000 civilians lost their lives in the massacre.

The Battle of New Orleans sets its scenes with an almost unbelievably colorful cast of characters - a happenstance coalition of militia-men, regulars, untrained frontiersmen, free blacks, Indians, townspeople, and of course, Jackson himself. His glorious, improbable victory will catapult a once-poor, uneducated orphan boy into the White House and forge the beginning of a true nation.
