Story
Evan Smoak is a highly trained former government assassin who has survived for years by keeping his circle to a few trusted confidants and a strict code he calls “The Ten Commandments.” But when Evan suddenly finds himself at odds with his oldest friend, all the rules he lives by shatter—and the consequences are murderous. Tommy Stojack might be Evan's best friend in the world. He’s a gifted gunsmith who has created much of Evan's own weapons and combat gear. But now, he has apparently crossed one of Evan's hardest lines and their argument explodes into open warfare.

Story
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

Am a big fan of this series, until this book. How could I have so misjudged Gamache? Jean Guy was the one with the potty mouth, never Gamache. And yet in this story even Gamache was throwing out curse words all over the place. The F bomb was way too prevalent for my liking.
Beyond that, I just did not find the story that compelling. Louise, I thought better of you.

Story
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

Interesting premise … I especially like how he wove in little bits of yesteryear like Montgomery Wards department store, clothing styles, songs that were popular back then and so on. Was confused by Final Notes, but glad I kept listening to the WHOLE thing, esp the Citizen of the Century 2012 part 🥰

I love this series, and in particular, I love the way George Newburn narrates it. In my mind, I picture the person of Nate Shepherd looks like Speaker Mike Johnson. True confession, I *might* have a slight crush on Johnson, but that’s a story for another day, lol!
Suffice it to say that I really like the series, and I love how ethical and moral the entire family is.
Keep up the good work, Michael Stagg!

Rapp is back!!!
Reviewed: 09-10-24
Kudos to Don Bentley for picking up where Vince and Kyle so capably left off. I admit I was extremely disappointed in Kyle's last book in the series, as it mostly felt like Kyle was just checking a box. Add to that, I couldn't get over not having George Guidall as the voice of Mitch Rapp. I said back then that it was NOT Steven Weber's fault, he just wasn't Guidall. Looking back now, I understand that it was time for George to step down and allow a new - younger - voice to take over. I can heartily say that with this book, Weber has cemented himself as that new voice and I thought he did an exceptional job.
Overall, I felt like Bentley captured the pure essence of Mitch Rapp, and I like that he started his tenure by going back in time to a younger Rapp. So that puts me in an all-too-familiar spot: thrilled at having finished another awesome read, and bummed that I have finished another read. Now it's the waiting game again . . .

It all started harmlessly enough. An egged window, a deflated car tire, and a few garden gnomes knocked over. But then, the silent calls began–late nights and early mornings to landlines and mobiles, and numbers that no one should have access to.
