This book had two of my hates in storytelling.
CW:
P*dophilia
Inc*st
*If you need content warnings, I know there are more; I just don’t keep track unless they are the ones I hate. I’m sure another review has a complete list.*
Luckily, there was plenty of foreshadowing, so I had time to stop. Sometimes, I can get through these “themes” with the hope that the person will get what’s coming to them. But the MC, Tan-Tan’s, story was so depressing that whatever justice happened was pale in comparison. I spent the whole book feeling irritated that she couldn’t catch a break.
Reactions:
Beginning:
Antonio is kinda trash….
Tan-Tan: We go home now, Daddy?
Antonio: no. We can’t go home; they’ll just find me there.
(Excuse me, YOU can’t go home! I sure as hell can!)😭
WHY WOULD YOU EXILE YOURSELF KNOWING after your trial THEY PROBABLY WOULD HAVE DONE THAT ANYWAYS?!?!?!?!?! WHAT IS THE REASON?!?!?!?!
I could only think he didn’t want to go alone.
Middle:
Sigh. I hate this.
Antonio is trash.
End:
… 2 seconds of good doesn’t erase the lifetime of bad. 😩
2 stars because although the story was not for me, I enjoyed the world and language.

End: sad but good. a little rushed...

Story
When it comes to law and order, East Texas plays by its own rules - a fact that Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger, knows all too well. Deeply ambivalent about growing up black in the Lone Star State, he was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could. Until duty called him home. When his allegiance to his roots puts his job in jeopardy, he travels up Highway 59 to the small town of Lark, where two murders - a black lawyer from Chicago and a local white woman - have stirred up a hornet's nest of resentment.

Where are we going with this???
Reviewed: 06-21-24
This book was a lot slower than what I’m used to. It has the feeling of sitting around the fire and sharing stories. It’s warm and sorta relaxing even with the violence and conflicts. I don’t know if I would’ve been able to finish the book if it wasn’t the audio version. One of the best parts was being able to play it while doing pottery on my patio or doing computer work. Having someone in my ear keeping me company and telling a story was nice.
Beginning:
I’m interested in the MC and his interactions with this stranger.
Middle: At times I wish we could take a break from the manuscript and go back to the present and other times I want the opposite.
Also, this book is surprisingly queer. Didn’t see that coming.
End: Just as cozy as the beginning. Things ended just as abruptly as they began.

Hold on do I like sci-fi?
Reviewed: 06-21-24
I usually do not like sci-fi books because I spend 90% of the time confused. This book does a really good job of not only diving into science and Science Fiction but also dumbing it down for the reader. Up to this point, I was considering taking all the Science Fiction books out of my TBR because I honestly didn’t think I would ever be able to enjoy them.
Anyways reactions:
Beginning:
Things are a little slow and kind of depressing. Things are happening, but there is a limited amount of characters and interactions so it feels like a slow progression. I’m not in any rush so it’s fine.
Middle:
Now we have jumped to the future/our present. Things are a little confusing especially compared to the things we were learning in the past. I am equally interested in what is currently happening and what’s happening in the video game. Sometimes other storylines can be annoying and you just want them to be over but I am curious about how everything ties together.
End:
The very last two or three chapters do a really good job of 1. explaining all of the weird shit that’s been happening and how it’s been happening. And 2. Summarizing just how self-centered and narcissistic the antagonists are. This could’ve been written in a way where the antagonists want to share, but are willing to step on others to deal with what they want. That would make them look a little more merciful than destructive. By the way, the antagonists are written there’s no chance for any of the other characters to believe that the antagonists care. They barely care about each other.

Beginning:
So far this book is a slow ride. Things are happening slowly information is getting shared slowly. It’s also super depressing. Like there’s no sense of hope in this dystopian world, and the hope that they do have is very minimal.
Middle:
Sometimes I wish I could stick with one character a little longer than others. But all in all I’m interested in how all of these people are going to come together/relate to each other in the end.
End:
I am not exaggerating when I tell you, my jaw DROPPED!!!!
