Story
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Story
The Earth had buckled, and, in that movement, all that was not in its place fell upon the Earth’s children, upon the blameless as well as the guilty, without discrimination. At the end of a long sweltering day, as markets and businesses begin to close for the evening, an earthquake of 7.0 magnitude shakes the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince. Award-winning author Myriam J. A. Chancy masterfully charts the inner lives of the characters affected by the disaster

View of a World I Did Not Know

These wonderfully interwoven characters showed me different aspects of a land I knew nothing about. The author brought me to know and care about each through this catastrophic event. A worthy read.

In this revelatory, authoritative portrait of Donald J. Trump and the toxic family that made him, Mary L. Not Much Revealed
Reviewed: 07-21-20
Little new information about D Trump was presented that has not been tossed around from other sources. If nothing else, it shows him to be consistent in character and action throughout his life. The most interesting part of the tale was the biography of Mary’s father. Overall a sad story which is summed up succinctly by the title. Engaging in the fervor of current politics but no literary time.

Story
In March 1865, the long and bitter War between the States is winding down. Till now, 23-year-old Simon Boudlin has evaded military duty thanks to his slight stature, youthful appearance, and utter lack of compunction about bending the truth. But following a barroom brawl in Victoria, Texas, Simon finds himself conscripted, however belatedly, into the Confederate Army. Luckily his talent with a fiddle gets him a comparatively easy position in a regimental band.

Old Timey Tale
Reviewed: 07-21-20
No high tension scenes but an interesting tale of post Civil War times and ways. Characters were well developed and the descriptions made for good visuals in the reader’s mind. The plot and story were straight through with little twist nor subplot and that was a weakness. The story was appropriate for all ages.
