About this listen

In this revelatory, authoritative portrait of Donald J. Trump and the toxic family that made him, Mary L. Trump, a trained clinical psychologist and Donald’s only niece, shines a bright light on the dark history of their family in order to explain how her uncle became the man who now threatens the world’s health, economic security, and social fabric.

Mary Trump spent much of her childhood in her grandparents’ large, imposing house in the heart of Queens, where Donald and his four siblings grew up. She describes a nightmare of traumas, destructive relationships, and a tragic combination of neglect and abuse. She explains how specific events and general family patterns created the damaged man who currently occupies the Oval Office, including the strange and harmful relationship between Fred Trump and his two oldest sons, Fred, Jr., and Donald.

A firsthand witness to countless holiday meals and family interactions, Mary brings an incisive wit and unexpected humor to sometimes grim, often confounding family events. She recounts in unsparing detail everything from her uncle Donald’s place in the family spotlight and Ivana’s penchant for regifting to her grandmother’s frequent injuries and illnesses and the appalling way Donald, Fred Trump’s favorite son, dismissed and derided him when he began to succumb to Alzheimer’s.

Numerous pundits, armchair psychologists, and journalists have sought to parse Donald J. Trump’s lethal flaws. Mary L. Trump has the education, insight, and intimate familiarity needed to reveal what makes Donald, and the rest of her clan, tick. She alone can recount this fascinating, unnerving saga, not just because of her insider’s perspective but also because she is the only Trump willing to tell the truth about one of the world’s most powerful and dysfunctional families.

Too good to put into adequate words

I had pre-ordered a hard copy and then decided to also get it here this morning, thinking it would be better to have my own impression before interviews and reviews of others clouded my opinion. I had no idea when I purchased it that it was also read by Mary Trump. I started this morning and carried it with me as I cleaned and did the laundry lost in the story throughout this day. I've just finished and felt as though a friend had told me a story that she simply had to put into words, onto paper, and read to tell her side of a story that was long overdue for the world to hear. I am filled with admiration for this woman who is the most likable of people and who obviously is the best this family has to offer. Long may she live and how blessed we are for her voice. She tells us what we all know to be true. I only took a slight break to check on Twitter to see that the world was "okay" and read about the bizarre press conference that Trump held today in the Rose Garden, this is the man that Mary describes so accurately. Everyone who reads it should pledge to get others to read it and to vote, like our very lives depend on it because they do. Thank You Mary Trump.

Wonderful insight of the early years

Hats off to Mary. This was well written and was not a trash Donald book. She gave insight and analysis.

Most of us know Donald is a lunatic, but Mary gives us a mental road map of why he is one.

Omg listened straight through, absolutely riveting. I perceived Donald Trump as a child and now my worse fears of this man has come to fruition. Hopefully this is an awakening for America.

Descent into a pathologically dysfunctional family

It took a lot of integrity to write this book knowing the kind of blowback the author is getting now and will get in the future.

The book is well done and explains how Donald Trump was created by parents who probably never should’ve had children. During my time as a child protection worker when we ran into families like this we ended up with little kids removed and placed in foster families or in mental health facilities, but because of the wealth of the family this dysfunction was able to continue long-term and twist all of the children of Fred Trump.

Being a mental health professional, the author is able to provide some insights from personal experience as well as from research that lead to a better understanding of how we have this very dangerous person in the highest office in America

Everyone should listen to Mary read her book

This is a story for a generation.
So many people grew up this way, but didn’t take it to the extreme that this damaged man has .
I applaud Mary for getting it out in time to open the eyes of many who don’t know how Mr. Trump works and thinks.

Thank you for the insight

A quick and wonderful read! Highly recommend! It explains to those who don’t suffer from Donald’s mental illnesses how he can say and do what he does. Monsters do exist, and now one heads our federal government!

Unflinching

I found this book both alarming, sad, and unsurprising. Thanks, MT, for your unflinching honesty. I was appalled at the abuse and neglect depicted here, the sheer heartlessness in a family that desperately needs the ability to love unselfishly. It explains so much.

Thank you Mary Trump for letting us know

Thank you Mary Trump for letting us know how this monster was created. Thank you for having the integrity to honestly and unflinchingly share the corruption, evil, coldness, and indecency over multiple generations in your family line for the public good. I know few people who would be this bold. This is a lesson to families and to our society of how not to be. She is in-depth, insightful, shares thorough observation and powerful analysis.

Well Done and Chilling

Riveting and frightening, Mary Trump’s exposé on her uncle’s path to the White House is incredibly bleak and disturbing. In the telling of her family’s saga, she creates the shocking ascent of a second, undeserving son whose inability to achieve anything on his own merit has caused massive destruction and death on the world stage. Craving adulation, a monster created by his father has been let loose upon the world. A must read for every patriotic American. Mary Trump deserves a Pulitzer Prize for literature for her stunning portrayal and unmasking of the pretender and undeserving occupant of the White House!
