With no power, no heat, and a total grid collapse, tough times keep getting tougher. But when America is struck with an EMP, this small group of survivors will be forced out of the frying pan and into the fire. Nothing beautiful or admirable
Reviewed: 12-26-24
For any story to be engaging, there must be a struggle for what is good and beautiful and the characters must be in this struggle. I only got through part of the second book in this series before I gave up. There was actually nothing truly good in the book. There was no true love to fight for. The good guys of the story are fully self-serving and unfaithful, given to their passions. There is no conflict conscience. Violence is reveled. Sexual promiscuity is reveled. The only virtue extolled is freedom. If life was this way, there would be no reason to persevere through difficulty. I see no reason to persevere through this book. I’m quitting.

Story
In Williamsburg, Brooklyn, just a block or two up from the East River on Division Avenue, Surie Eckstein is soon to be a great-grandmother. Her 10 children range in age from 13 to 39. Her in-laws, postwar immigrants from Romania, live on the first floor of their house. Her daughter Tzila Ruchel lives on the second. She and Yidel, a scribe in such demand that he makes only a few Torah scrolls a year, live on the third. Wed when Surie was 16, they have a happy marriage and a full life, and, at the ages of 57 and 62, they are looking forward to some quiet time together.

This is a love story. Real love stories are born through pain and the joy of true love endures and grows with age.

Enjoyable Series

I’ve enjoyed reading each book so far. I like the Duke Fontaine‘s writing style and I can really get into the story line and characters. The books also give me some things to think over, if I ever end up facing a similar situation, which actually doesn’t seem that unlikely.

Story
Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin’s monumental epic cycle of high fantasy that began with A Game of Thrones. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace . . . only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.

Disappointing

This book is full of new characters and some of my least favorite characters. I really wanted to find out what was going on with my faves but they were hardly mentioned.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

A great story

This is a beautiful story of love, brokenness, loss, forgiveness and renewal. It is also a history lesson. American dealt fair with Japan in World War 2, although some would say otherwise.
