I don’t need to be preached to
Reviewed: 12-26-24
I know the world is focused on sexual orientation, identity, choice… whatever. I listen to stories to escape the world, not to be preached at about some big social thing. I ignored it the first time, I let it go the second, but by the third, I was done. When, in the middle of the story, a situation is shoehorned in, just for the sake of including it so you can say “look what I did!”, it takes me out of the story in the worst way. I love theses stories, but not enough to give in. Returned it and won’t finish the series.

Story
It’s not easy making the career jump from office-supplies-store middle manager to heroic interdimensional adventurer. At least, Jason tries to be heroic, but it's hard to be good when all your powers are evil. He’ll face off against cannibals, cultists, wizards, monsters...and that’s just on the first day. He’s going to need courage, he’s going to need wit, and he’s going to need some magic powers of his own. But first, he’s going to need pants.

Wanted to love it, hated the preaching
Reviewed: 11-22-24
The story is fun, and I wanted to listen more, but after a while I just couldn’t deal with the socialist rants every other chapter. I understand that your beliefs will leach into your writing, but this was so abrupt and blatant, it took away from the story.

Love the MHI world, but this needed an editor badl
Reviewed: 07-15-24
All the pieces are there, and the stories are great, but you can tell they didn’t spend much time after translating it to make it correct. It takes you out of the story when you have to go “Huh?” every 5 mins because the sentence structure was butchered so badly. It actually reads like a really good first or second draft. It just needed a little love to get it there.

Story
Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

It is exactly what it is…
Reviewed: 07-02-24
It is a bunch of good notes, set aside by a good author to fill in the blanks later. Then picked up by someone who really doesn’t care about the story, and all those bits and pieces between are soulless. For example, on the outline was written “helicopter crash here”. It was then written as “random character with no invested story magically appears. Wrecks helicopter… moving on.” The worst part is I paid money for this, so I cannot return it. It will be in my archive just stinking up the place.

An editor should have caught the repetition
Reviewed: 05-06-23
This book would have been an hour shorter without the repetition. The author repeated the basis of the plot so many times, that you almost ceased to care. You just didn’t want him to say it again. I haven’t even finished the book, and I really just don’t want to hear why we are going back to the plateau one more time. I only bought the second book because the idea is great, even with the stupid repetitive prose.

When linguist Andrew Dennison is yanked from his bed by the Secret Service and taken to a top secret facility in the desert, he has no idea he's been brought there to translate the words of an ancient demon. He joins pretty but cold veterinarian Sun Jones, eccentric molecular biologist Dr. Frank Belgium, and a hodge-podge of religious, military, and science personnel to try and figure out if the creature is, indeed, Satan. But things quickly go bad, and very soon Andy isn't just fighting for his life, but the lives of everyone on earth…

I was really trying to like this book, but I just couldn’t get through it. The writing was clunky and just couldn’t keep me interested enough in the characters to listen till the end. The narrator though is great. I will watch out for him in the future. He is the only reason I listened as long as I did. The author has great instincts for his stories, he just needs a partner to keep him on track with the characters in it.

Jack “Rabbit” Fields knew a good thing when he saw it, whether it was a sound horse, a sure bet, or a pretty sage hen. When it came to locking horns with any curly wolves he ran into along the trail, he tended to shoot first - a notion that had saved his hide more times than he could count. But that was before he came to Deadwood. Now, someone is stealing freshly dead bodies right out of their graves, and Rabbit and his amigos are on the hunt to figure out who. And more important, why?

This series is a perfect example of a “Weird West” story. Most west, with enough weird to keep you going. Really what the authors do, is make the strangeness seem like just that, a difference that keeps you wanting more. You can find a thousand western novels, but when the monsters come out…

When Longmire meets a woman jailed for her husband's death, he travels outside his usual haunts to discover the truth behind this unusual murder case.

This was a little different Longmire story, because most of the supporting cast that you know and love weren’t there for most of it. They had their moments, but it was refreshing to see Craig Johnson spend a little more time on new characters.
