Story
In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage. When a huge storm sweeps up the coast, trapping everyone on tiny Williwaw Island, it’s a race against time—and the elements — to stop the murderer from striking again.

I stopped by the end of the first chapter. Terrible.
Reviewed: 08-08-24
The first female character is such an awful, disrespectful human being that I couldn’t listen to it anymore and I didn’t even finish the first chapter. I don’t care about the story enough to sit through that. It’s such an exaggerates characterization that it just seems lazy on the part of the author. Ugh.

So clever and funny! I love this series!

I love the writing, use of obsolete language, the clever sexual innuendo, the showing of elder women who are not smothered by Queen Elizabeth’s virginity nonsense, and the equality in the relationship between V. Speedwell and Mr. Stoker.

Story
Margot and James are broken up—for good this time. James made sure of it when he dropped the bomb on Margot: that he doesn’t want kids, ever. Then, on the biggest morning of his life, James—an ambitious lawyer at a high-powered firm—wakes up pregnant. He realizes with dread that he is part of a recent epidemic of men suddenly and inexplicably becoming pregnant. His condition obvious to the higher-ups, James is denied the promotion he was expecting, sending him reeling.

Brilliant! Made even this feminist recognize some implicit bias in herself! Hearing the dilemmas from this perspective can make the listener aware of how ridiculous it can sound but has been so normalized, it takes the brilliant artistry, passion, and genius of someone of the author’s caliber to truly HEAR it!

Story
San Francisco, 1906. In a city bustling with newly minted millionaires and scheming upstarts, two very different women hope to change their fortunes: Gemma, a golden-haired, silver-voiced soprano whose career desperately needs rekindling, and Suling, a petite and resolute Chinatown embroideress who is determined to escape an arranged marriage. Their paths cross when they are drawn into the orbit of Henry Thornton, a charming railroad magnate whose extraordinary collection of Chinese antiques includes the fabled Phoenix Crown, a legendary relic of Beijing’s fallen Summer Palace.

I can’t recommend this book enough. For first responders; old guard and new, for those who fear or hate law enforcement, for those who want to support our first responders, and for those who have been impacted by the job and can’t put it into words, here, they’ve done it for you. Sgt. Sugrue goes beyond the narrative and provides the insight of thought and emotion and Dr. Springer makes it make sense. A cultural game changer!

This was one of those books that you wonder how you made it this far without just ending it. The story was weak at best, the writing was atrocious and absolutely no subtly to it, the story forced to make any sense and wrapping up loose ends was abrupt and silly. Don’t waste your time. The only thing that salvaged it was the reader was good. Bless her for working with such awful material!

Terribly written, torturous waiting time for plot, and flat, less than satisfying ending
Reviewed: 03-30-23
This could’ve been as short as a clickbait article and I feel like I wasted my life listening. Glad it was at least free. The story was painful, and it drug on unnecessarily. There was no satisfaction at the end. For all the angst, I would’ve been willing to consider it worth my time if at least the ending would’ve been written to match the rest of the book but this was just awful.
