A mysterious cargo plane, flanked by a squadron of Russia’s most lethal fighters, has just taken off from a remote airbase. Closely monitored by the United States, no one inside the Pentagon has any idea where it’s going or what it’s carrying. A high-level Russian defector, a walking vault of secrets that could shatter the West, seeks asylum in Norway. Across the continent, in the heart of Paris, a lone French agent stumbles upon a conspiracy so explosive it could ignite a global firestorm.

Story
In the war-ravaged borderlands of Ukraine, a Russian mercenary unit has gone rogue. Its members, conscripted from the worst prisons and mental asylums across Russia, are the most criminally violent, psychologically dangerous combatants to ever set foot upon the modern battlefield. With all attention focused on the frontlines, they have pushed deeper into the interior to wage a campaign of unspeakable barbarity. As they move from village to village, committing horrific war crimes, they meet little resistance as all able-bodied men are off fighting the war.

Who was the author?
Reviewed: 03-02-25
As a dedicated fan of the Scot Harvath series, I've eagerly devoured every book, finding each story to be a thrilling and immersive experience until now. Unfortunately, this book was an absolute letdown. I’ve wasted 11 hours and 51 minutes of my life listening to it.
From start to finish, the story dragged on without purpose. I kept waiting for that familiar spark, the captivating twists, and the pulse pounding action that I’ve come to expect from Brad Thor’s writing. Instead, I was met with a flat narrative that failed to advance the overarching storyline in any meaningful way. It almost felt like a filler episode in a beloved series. Maybe thrown together to meet a deadline rather than to captivate an audience?
What makes this experience even more frustrating is the contrast with my recent listen to "Shadow of Doubt" which delivered everything I love about Scot Harvath’s adventures. If you’re a fan of the series, do yourself a favor and skip this one. You won't miss a thing in the story line and you’ll save yourself from the same disappointment I felt. It’s a shame. This series has set such a high standard, and this book fell painfully short.

Replacement character for Scot
Reviewed: 12-17-22
Scot Harvath was replaced as the main character by Asha in this book. Scot had an occasional "cameo appearance" and came back for the last 45 min of the book. If the author wants to replace Scot Harvath it would probably be best to kill of the main protagonist of the series or retire him or find some way to transition from Scot to Asha. But this was the worst Scot Harvath book ever written by Brad Thor. Even the narrator sounded disappointed for all ten and a half hours of the reading.

"If Robert Littell didn't invent the American spy novel," says Tom Clancy, "he should have." In this spectacular Cold-War-as-Alice-in-Wonderland epic, Littell, "the American le Carre," takes us down the rabbit hole and into the labyrinthine world of espionage that has been the CIA for the last half-century. "Ostensibly a single novel, The Company can also be listened to as an anthology of cracking good spy stories," says ( Publishers Weekly).

A book that keeps you up at night
Reviewed: 08-27-12
What did you love best about The Company?
The depth of the story and characters gave the book a real gripping edge while the author didn't seem to fixate on a specific character and only work that character's profile. All the important characters got the same attention from the author.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Leo Kritzky is an interesting character because of the love hate relationship that the reader can have with him.
What about Scott Brick’s performance did you like?
Scott Brick is one of my favorite narrators. I find myself searching on books narrated by Scott Brick and then looking at the story before deciding to buy the book. Scott has an amazing talent to lend authenticity to characters as much through his accents as his ability to vary his voice pitch and pace.

Annoying sound effects
Reviewed: 08-23-09
The book was great, as expected. My only criticism is around the sound effects of the audiobook. It is the first audiobook that I have listened to that contains gunfire, explosion, lightning and other sound effects. It either implies the listener has no imagination or some sound tech was overzealous and couldn't keep his newly acquired sound clip library in check.

Story
The Republicans are coming to St. Paul for their convention. Throwing a big party is supposed to be fun, but crashing the party are a few hard cases the police would rather have stayed away. Chief among them is a crew of professional stick-up men who've spotted several lucrative opportunities, ranging from political moneymen with briefcases full of cash to that armored-car warehouse with the weakness in its security system.

Initially 3, then 4 stars...
Reviewed: 08-16-09
Initially I gave the book a 3-star rating but then changed it to 4. The story was very good, the plot was very good but the language started to unravel closer to the end. I really don't mind strong language when it is part of a situation, but it is gratuitous to the later part of the book.
I thought about the 3-star rating and realized that it might be an unfair punishment for a smaller literary sin. Back to the story, I would definitely recommend this book!
