Story
Easy Company, 506th Airborne Division, U.S. Army, was as good a rifle company as any in the world. From their rigorous training in Georgia in 1942 to D-Day and victory, Ambrose tells the story of this remarkable company, which kept getting the tough assignments. Easy Company was responsible for everything from parachuting into France early D-Day morning to the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden. Band of Brothers is the account of the men of this remarkable unit.

Band of Brothers is wonderful. If you are familiar with the work and are selecting this for nostalgia, I recommend “Beyond Band of Brothers” by Dick Winters as an alternative if you have to choose.

Story
Marine Corps Fighter Squadron 214 was hastily organized in the field during World War II to meet the urgent need for another combat squadron in the South Pacific. The squadron, self-named the "Black Sheep", went on under the leadership of the swashbuckling "Pappy" Boyington to become the most famous in Marine Corps history. Now comes the true story of the Black Sheep Squadron and the men who wrote its record in the Pacific skies.

I really enjoyed this story. It is similar to Fighting Corsairs. I thought that the personal accounts were just that but the story itself perhaps not as well written. The performance made it easy to feel the author was reading. I hope the Black Sheep eventually forgave the TV show. There are a lot of 50 somethings that are interested in their and others’ legacy because of it. Go college boys!

The millions of people around the world who loved What If? still have questions, and those questions are getting stranger. Thank goodness xkcd creator Randall Munroe is here to help. Planning to ride a fire pole from the Moon back to Earth? The hardest part is sticking the landing. Hoping to cool the atmosphere by opening everyone’s freezer door at the same time? Maybe it’s time for a brief introduction to thermodynamics. Want to know what would happen if you rode a helicopter blade, made a lava lamp out of lava, or jumped on an erupting geyser? Okay, if you insist.

What if you had and excellent result and performance and then tried too hard to improve upon it?
Well, you might end up with What If 2. I listened to these back to back, perhaps that was my error. I still enjoyed it but perhaps I overdosed.

Story
Millions of people visit xkcd.com each week to read Randall Munroe's iconic webcomic. His stick-figure drawings about science, technology, language, and love have a large and passionate following. Fans of xkcd ask Munroe a lot of strange questions. What if you tried to hit a baseball pitched at 90 percent of the speed of light? How fast can you hit a speed bump while driving and live? If there were a robot apocalypse, how long would humanity last?

Story
From historian and columnist in Leatherneck and Armor magazines, this is the exciting, personal account of a marine fighter squadron in the South Pacific during the critical days of 1943, when the tide turned against the Japanese. Based on individual interviews and wartime documents, this is a thrilling narrative of the marines who lived, and died, during the toughest battles of the entire war.

Hey you’ve never ever sat in one but you grew up with Black Sheep and you know who you are. This book is the right combination of story telling and details, at least for me. I enjoyed it more than Race Of Aces. If you’re into 4FUs and tails from the Solomons this is for you, even if you are a “college boy”.

Story
The Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) was the third most powerful navy in the world at the start of World War II and came to dominate the Pacific in the early months of the war. This was a remarkable turnaround for a navy that only began to modernize in 1868. The Imperial Japanese Navy in the Pacific War details the Japanese ships which fought in the Pacific and examines the principles on which they were designed, how they were armed, when and where they were deployed, and how effective they were in battle.

This book is a good reference of the IJN’s ships, technology and catalog of performance. For me it is what I was looking for. I do agree with other reviewers that the reader’s (inconsistent) mispronunciations became distracting. But this was probably better than using an artificial accent like an NPR intern when attempting Japanese names. Again this is much more of a technical reference than a story. There is something fascinatingly romantic about the IJN ships individually yet collectively the war they waged was barbaric and pointless.

The company of the Ring is torn asunder. Frodo and Sam continue their journey alone down the great River Anduin - alone, that is, save for the mysterious creeping figure that follows wherever they go. This continues the classic tale begun in The Fellowship of the Ring, which reaches its awesome climax in The Return of the King.

I do continue to believe that the screen adaptation of this trilogy improved upon the original. But if they were exactly the same then we would have less to enjoy.
