Will read anything with an Italian setting but this fell flat. The present day narrative showed promise but the past narrative which was the heart of the murder mystery was just flaccid and left me wondering why Mari and Lara who were supposedly 70’s icons didn’t have more verve

I struggled to care about these 2 women. Maybe it was the POV but this needed 2 narrators to differentiate their stories. What drew me was the wine world and it was never fully fleshed out

Why did you cheap out on narrators. The beauty of this series is the Italian authenticity. Why did you choose a narrator who does not know enough Italian to pronounce Chiara. Chi-ar-ibis like nails on a chalkboard

Story
It is 1502, and Rodrigo Borgia, a self-confessed womanizer and master of political corruption, is now on the papal throne as Alexander VI. His daughter Lucrezia, age 22 - already three times married and a pawn in her father's plans - is discovering her own power. And then there is his son Cesare Borgia, brilliant, ruthless, and increasingly unstable; it is his relationship with Machiavelli that gives the Florentine diplomat a master class in the dark arts of power and politics.

Another deep dive into the Italian Renaissance for Sarah Dunant though it reads more like history than the wonderfully imaginative worlds of the author's original Renaissance novels.

Kate Quinn is masterful while mixing 3 lives in Renaissance Rome. Carmela the cook’s journey is a sensory feast. Leonello, the dwarf’s journey is full of searing and bitter humanism, and Guila is a surprise to behold with her laughter and inner strength.
