Story
Conceited, unattainable, and downright delicious, renowned Michelin-starred chef Ambrose Casablancas has one passion in life: food. Women are a distraction, and he doesn’t do those. Especially Cal Litvin, his baby sister’s best friend. Her entire existence is a complication; she’s awkward, eccentric, infuriating… And, much to his chagrin, hotter than his kitchen. Ambrose has a lot on his plate: a new restaurant to open, a multi-million-dollar property deal to execute, and a violent stalker to tame. Then Cal shows up at his doorstep.

Each chapter was introduced with a song from the 90's, and I loved that! Play it in the background when you read this book 😉

Distracting narration
Reviewed: 11-15-24
There's too much going on in the narrator's voice (echo/auto-tune) to be able to focus objectively.

Story
My name is Jemma Blackburn, and I'm a Slayer. Finding out I wasn't human was only the beginning of my problems. My best friend, Taylor, is still missing, and so is the Immortal Amulet, and it's my job alone to get them both back. I don't know who I can trust, and I'm still not sure I'm cut out for any of this, but I'm determined to figure it all out, or die trying. As if that wasn't bad enough, there's a new enemy in town and they've come bearing gifts - an ancient prophecy that is going to blur the very lines between good and evil. And, apparently, my blood is tied to the center of it.

I won't be finishing this series
Reviewed: 02-14-24
Main character's choices don't reflect anything she's learned from her traumatic life experiences. It's one badly justified decision after another that was frustrating to read.
Also, why put so much emphasis on an ancient magical amulet that's supposed to protect the wearer, then give us two books where she's attacked again and again while wearing it? The irony is, when the people around her warn her about her faulty plans, she uses the 'I have a magical amulet, I'll be fine' excuse, even though it hasn't been directly responsible for saving her yet.

After book one, I was fully invested in this world, and all of its amazing supporting characters!! Mr. Tom & Niamh's banter/shade/insults keep me laughing, and I love the growth that Jessie has with each book. It's a relief to read about a female heroine that reflects on the lessons she's learned in life, and ACTUALLY uses that knowledge to navigate her new path. Such a fun series. I'll definitely suggest this one to my book club.
