Publisher's summary

In Emily R. King's thrilling fantasy debut, an orphan girl blossoms into a warrior, summoning courage and confidence in her fearless quest to upend tradition, overthrow an empire, and reclaim her life as her own.

As an orphan ward of the Sisterhood in the ancient Tarachand Empire, eighteen-year-old Kalinda is destined for nothing more than a life of seclusion and prayer. Plagued by fevers, she's an unlikely candidate for even a servant's position, let alone a courtesan or wife. Her sole dream is to continue living in peace in the Sisterhood's mountain temple.

But a visit from the tyrant Rajah Tarek disrupts Kalinda's life. Within hours, she is ripped from the comfort of her home, set on a desert trek, and ordered to fight for her place among the rajah's ninety-nine wives and numerous courtesans. Her only solace comes in the company of her guard, the stoic but kind Captain Deven Naik.

Faced with the danger of a tournament to the death - and her growing affection for Deven - Kalinda has only one hope for escape, and it lies in an arcane, forbidden power buried within her.

SO SO SO GOOD!!

I think it’s hilarious that there are so many reviews on here that are condemning the book for being anti-feminist and “all about stereotypes” and 1 stars are given because “women are treated poorly” in it.

NEWSFLASH: that’s what the author intended.

It’s important to see here that Emily R. King is writing, in this novel, what our patriarchal society wishes it can do. The themes in this Novel are covering things like rape, privilege, societal views on women, etc. The thing is, the novel is discussing what COULD be if we let our world continue down this road of women oppression. I don’t see Handmaiden’s Tale getting reviews like these. 🙄

Anyway, I loved the book!!!. I think it was beautifully written, I adored the characters and the storylines between them (I loved Kali and Jaya’s relationship the most). I listened to the audio, of course, and Lauren Ezzo scores again and gives a performance of a lifetime.

I can’t wait to listen to the others that’s are out!

EH

It was... entertaining. Not the worst thing ever, but there were some common antiquated tropes used throughout the story. there was also a disconnected between some of the characters. Old wise informant's wisdom didn't seem earned but instead forced. Certain relationships didn't seemed earned either. I think perhaps this is mostly the way the narrator performed, making characters sound unlike their intended character type.

Fair listen equally as fair performance.

Very creative subject however I'm not sure why some of the descriptions of the Captain felt more like a gateway into soft porn.

Enjoyable book

The story was very interesting. I liked how the story continued to unfold but I really wanted to smack the heroine several times for being so daft about how her decisions would hurt others. But then it’s all part of the story and the story was well written.
Not sure I can sit through the rest of the series tho.

Riveting Story

King writes a riveting and compelling narrative - Kalinda's journey, though somewhat predictable, was written in such a way that I found myself caring about what happened to her. I was drawn into her feelings easily and had strong feelings about each of the characters she encountered, from hatred of Tarek to sympathy for Asha, her servant. I related well to her and enjoyed her character's development.

I'm sad to see the next installment of the series isn't on audible, so it will take me much longer to get around to reading the other two books, but I look forward to finishing the series.
