Story
Professor Theo Cray is trained to see patterns where others see chaos. So when mutilated bodies found deep in the Montana woods leave the cops searching blindly for clues, Theo sees something they missed. Something unnatural. Something only he can stop. As a computational biologist, Theo is more familiar with digital code and microbes than the dark arts of forensic sleuthing.

The main character was irritating throughout the book. His behaviors and lack of knowledge of pop culture; how to behave around women; how to offer condolences etc. sounded like he was about fourteen years old. I wondered if he was on the spectrum somehow or just THE biggest nerd ever? I mean, this is a guy that can’t even leave a coherent voice mail explaining who he is and what he needs……and he teaches? Just not the book for me. I didn’t finish it -don’t care- just no more listening to this book! Also, the narrator was not a good fit for the story. He made Theo sound like he was way older than the author intended.

Too much repetition
Reviewed: 10-11-20
At times I thought I was in the wrong place but it was just info being repeated almost verbatim at another spot in the book. It was hard to finish because it seemed to go on and on. None of the people involved were portrayed very sympathetically and that made it hard to like anyone. I wouldn’t recommend this to my friends or family.

It’s never just a simple but complex murder. It’s got to be a serial murderer working with other serial murderers and all targeting the same profiler. If I could insert a HUGE eye roll emoji I would do so. I would not recommend. I want my wasted time back. Thumbs down.

Randy Roth was handsome, hardworking, kind, and in top physical shape. But for all his charm and good looks, he was seemingly cursed with the ladies. This book was unbelievable from the start. And then he gets to the surface and it was almost cartoonish in its description. I expected a unicorn to stroll by or a fairy to flit among the flowers. The main character knew what too many archaic items and terms were....I don't care how many books he had read. I could not recommend this book in good conscience. I wasted a credit on this.

Whistled "S'es"
Reviewed: 04-07-18
I just cannot enjoy listening to a book where the narrator whistles on every "s" they speak. Maybe it's the particular wavelength I hear but when listening through headphones, it is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. I tried adjusting the EQ and added as much base as I could so that I might finish the book, but it was a struggle. Then I get to the end and it was just such a silly premise and the detective was such a whiny wanker that made mistake after mistake but he never got in trouble that I felt stupid for struggling through all the whistles to finish. The narrator did a good job emoting the book and the characters but he really needs to work on that whistle. Ugh.

starting a new series!
Reviewed: 02-21-18
The book is good, if not just a little dated since it came out in 1995, but despite being 22 years old it was fun and exciting. I am looking forward to continuing the rest of the series. And despite what a few others have said about the "special effects", I enjoyed the sound of echo when they were in tunnels or the sound of someone being on a telephone. I felt like it added to the story. I have always heard this was a good series and I am glad I am finally getting to it!
