About this listen

Detroit mortgage broker Mark Unger adored his wife Florence and their two young sons. But after a decade of marriage and increasing financial trouble, Mark's life began to slowly unravel. He became addicted to pain killers and gambling, and ended up spending five months in rehab.

Forced to go back to work, Flo became bitter and resentful of Mark and began to have an affair with one of his friends. When Mark returned home and his disability checks weren't enough to make ends meet, Flo filed for divorce.

Panicked by the thought losing her, Mark did everything he could to win Flo back. Even though she resisted his efforts, Flo did agree to a weekend getaway at the family's favorite lakeside resort. But after their first night there, Flo went missing...and the next day her corpse was found floating in the water. Mark claimed that her death was an accident - one that must have happened while he was up at the cottage putting the kids to sleep. But soon a jury would be convinced of what Flo's friends and family believed to be true: that Flo would never have been alone on the boat dock that night because she was deathly afraid of the dark.

I found that that gave too much information was given on everyone in the book.

Too much

I think that the story was too too long. I forced myself to listen to it to form an accurate review.
If you’re thinking of listening to this book just run and find something better.

This is the second book I’ve listened to, both by this author and narrator. The narrator really needs to look at his glaring mis-pronunciations (algae, buccal, rifle, etc.) Also, he’s very flat, Hannibal Lector sounding. The story is an interesting one, but this author weighs it down with way too much irrelevant information.

Oof- this narrator

This book is light on the facts and circumstances leading up to the event and way long on the court forensics and battle of the experts. Be prepared for lengthy audio discourse on forensics. Brings into question the veracity of expert witnesses and how they influence jurors.

If you like forensic file transcripts 👍

Very interesting book. I wish I had been on the jury!! Even if you think you know this story, you still need to read this book.

Kept me interested from start to finish!

I had never heard of this story before, but thoroughly enjoyed it. About halfway through I just assumed he would be found innocent. If he did it or not, who knows, but there was MORE THAN ENOUGH reasonable doubt to let him walk. That opinion was only solidified after hearing the note that was written to the prosecution by the jury foreman! If that doesn't induce anger in a bystander, I don't know what will.

Great story, but left me angry!

All in all a good story, though w/ a more strict editor, about an hour could have been eliminated. Simple, but educational pertaining to how difficult certain details are to decipher.

Just up the speed to avoid the straight jacket

This book was interesting but it could have been 3-4 hours shorter. The trial detail was at times tricky to follow and it was very extensive and included background information that detailed other trials that were completely separate from this book.

Interesting listen, at times dry and tedious
