Awful. Very disappointing
Reviewed: 12-09-24
I have enjoyed other books by Liane Moriarty so fully expected this one to be good. Sadly, it's terrible. I kept listening hoping something would shift. It didn't. The plot is an interesting idea never realized. One narrator was fine. The narrator of the the lead person's thought and life was gravely and grating. There is no bang for this buck. I can't believe this book is on lists of Best Books. Don't waste your time.

A slender novel of epic power and the winner of the Booker Prize 2024, Orbital deftly snapshots one day in the lives of six women and men traveling through space. Selected for one of the last space station missions of its kind before the program is dismantled, these astronauts and cosmonauts—from America, Russia, Italy, Britain, and Japan—have left their lives behind to travel at a speed of over seventeen thousand miles an hour as the earth reels below.

Although some of the language was wonderful, I prefer a book with a plot. I had to keep listening because it was our book club pick. I am very appreciative of many genres of audiobooks. This one was painful to stick with.

If you are a fan of Patrick Stewart, Shakespeare, the history of English theater in the 20th century, families, Star Trek, or a man's reveal and redemption, this book is for you. Yes, yes, he reads his memoir. No - he PERFORMS it - and delightfully so! A true joy to listen to as almost 19 hours flew by. I'm certain I will revisit chapters off and on as I do with other favorites. An exceptional listen! 5 stars all the way.

What a great story. I loved how the author brought me along on such a delightful ride. It was such fun to identify with the main character who, unbeknownst to her, is part of an unseen world. Going from her stressful and a bit mundane life to constantly being surprised by the truth of her abilities was really enjoyable. I felt along for the ride and I liked it! Kilcoyne has a great turn of phrase. The detail in the storytelling felt just right. It was just the right amount of wonder, conflict and sexual tension. The narrator was outstanding. I wondered how they got Lauren Bacall to narrate a book - haha. She's that good. I see this is the first book of a planned series. I'm in!

In her first novel since The God of War, critically acclaimed author Marisa Silver takes Dorothea Lange’s "Migrant Mother" photograph as inspiration for a breathtaking reinvention - a story of two women, one famous and one forgotten, and of the remarkable legacy of their singular encounter. In 1936, a young mother resting by the side of a road in Central California is spontaneously photographed by a woman documenting the migrant laborers who have taken to America’s farms in search of work....

This is an exceptional novel. Brilliantly written. So many creative phrases which convey a whole world. Really noteworthy. Marisa Silver takes a famous photograph and weaves a meaningful narrative about it. Not gimmicky, only (seemingly) true statement after true statement. I loved the narration. Each narrator contributed just the right tone to their part of the story. The book really should have won prizes. Maybe it did?? I'm sure I will be rereading it in years to come. What a gift to the world. A real find and a real pleasure.

But Annie wanted to see the Pacific Ocean before she died. She ignored her doctor’s advice to move into the county charity home. Instead, she bought a cast-off brown gelding named Tarzan, donned men’s dungarees, and headed south in mid-November, hoping to beat the snow.

What a combination of experiences and information this book provides! A very moving and touching story of one woman's outlandish story. In 1954 she rides cross country with a horse and a dog. By all rights she shouldn't make it 50 miles. But she perseveres. Her horse and her dog are present every step of the way! It's also the history of America in the mid- 1950's. Fascinating! Many interesting stories and details about what life was like - across the entire country. The author drove 10,000 miles to research the story. Very satisfying.

Amor Towles, already my favorite author on Audible because of The Gentleman From Moscow, has written a tour de force. He is a magnificent storyteller. He creates unusual characters who quickly become entirely believable. They get into dire situations which should have no good outcome. What does end up happening is surprising, even shocking, but then seem entirely reasonable. In this way, he reminds me of the great Patrick O'Brian, often referred to as the greatest writer of historical fiction of all time. The narration is superb. Just perfect. I know I will listen to this tale again. There is so much in it. I recommend it highly!

Story
Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life. While we all wonder how our lives might have been, what if you had the chance to go to the library and see for yourself? Would any of these other lives truly be better? In The Midnight Library, Nora Seed finds herself faced with this decision.

Love Carey Mulligan's narration. The story starts out interesting but quickly starts to plod along in a melodramatic way with not much pay off. I couldn't finish it, even though I love a book with a little fantasy in it. I would pass on this one.

Excellent! But why oh why let the author perform?!
Reviewed: 06-24-20
Super book, full of so much valuable information. Very important history that I never fully understood. A wonderful story. Very important to read. Glad I read it. But oh my goodness, why do publishers let the author read it himself?? Most writers are not good performers. There are a few- Louise Erdrich and Phillip Pullman come to mind. But Ibram X Kendi doesn't have the talent to sustain his book. I finished it IN SPITE of his narration. I hope publishers see this review and reconsider what must either be a cost saving measure or a vanity assignment.
That said, we should all read this book!
