About this listen

Winner of the 2024 Audie Award for Autobiography/Memoir

THE NEW YORK TIMES AND USA TODAY BESTSELLER

The renowned and bestselling memoir—written with “insight, truth, and passion” (Sir Ian McKellen)—from iconic, beloved actor and living legend Sir Patrick Stewart.

From his acclaimed stage triumphs to his legendary onscreen work, Sir Patrick Stewart has captivated audiences around the world and across multiple generations in a career spanning six decades with his indelible command of stage and screen. No other British working actor enjoys such career variety, universal respect, and unending popularity, as witnessed through his seminal roles—whether as Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek fame, Professor Charles Xavier of Marvel's X-Men hit movie franchise, his more than forty years as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company, his unforgettable one-man show adapted from Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, or his comedic work in American Dad!, Ted, Extras, and Blunt Talk, among many others. Now, he presents his stunning memoir, a revealing portrait of a driven artist whose astonishing life—from his humble beginnings in Yorkshire, England, to the heights of Hollywood and worldwide acclaim—proves a story as exuberant, definitive, and enduring as the author himself.

Critic reviews

“I read this book in a state of wonder, not just for the author’s gifts as a nuanced storyteller and sharp observer, but for those other remarkable gifts, of intelligence, sensitivity, wit, intuition, self-awareness, and élan that were bestowed on him when he came into the world—all of which he has freely shared with us so long and so beautifully; and finished reading in a state of deep gratitude for the gifts, and the gift, of Patrick Stewart.” —Michael Chabon

“Patrick’s early life is a Dickensian tale of domestic violence and misfortune, transformed by chance and some good folk into the actor internationally admired and loved. He writes as well as he acts, with insight, truth, and passion. Another Stewart Triumph!” —Sir Ian McKellen

“There is so much to say about Sir Patrick. He is an amazing actor, great to look at, really funny, and up for anything. He is a kind man…compassionate and sensitive….but, as you will find when you read the book, his greatest asset as a human being is the fact that he is so completely and unapologetically himself.” —Whoopi Goldberg

Amazing listen!

Magnificently read! Was so curious and intrigued that I found myself reading up and digging for photos to all the performers/actors he encountered throughout his career in British theatre and Hollywood!

Wonderful Piece of Life

I can’t come up with the right words to express how enjoyable this book was. Normally I don’t bother with memoirs but I took a gamble and it paid off. Sir Patrick was a delight, and the story of his life was so interesting to listen to. I actually wish it could had gone on longer! Mild shock!

Wonderful insights

Like many, I primarily know Patrick Stewart in his role as Captain of the Enterprise on Star Trek, and Charles Xavier in the X-Men series. I have also been fortunate to see him play other characters, but still never knew his background and history. His autobiography provides fantastic I sights into both the man and the actor. I thoroughly loved hearing his story, told by him directly.

Time is fleeting.

Patrick manages manages to make the most mundane of things that happen in his life a gripping and interesting story. Even a backroom wedding has the feel of an international conspiracy. I can only say bravo and well done. I was quite disappointed that the story was over as quickly as it was. An 18hr listen just flew by.
