Story
For decades, thousands of people have gathered in Omaha, Nebraska for the Berkshire Hathaway AGM, and quizzed Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger on everything from the psychology of successful investors to the future of Coca-Cola and Apple. But unless you attended, for many years you only had access to what people could remember and report back from the meetings.

This book was the closest I have ever come to feel as if I was at an actual Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholder meeting. I learned a lot about how Warren and Charlie own their successes and mistakes equally, devote their lives to learning, and remain focused on their primary purpose.

This book is a re-hash of the author's podcast interviews on her show, The Long View. I am a huge fan of Christine Benz. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of publishing a book based on existing, already published content. I won't buy anything from her in the future. It's really too bad because I was hoping to get lots of brand new content.

Excellent Book at the Perfect Time

Josh Brown's defining characteristic defies what most people think of Wall Street: Honesty. This is the most honest perspective on markets and investing that I have ever read. It touches on many controversial ideas---When everyone wind, we all lose---and uses humility and humor to teach through experience rather than academic equations. When I finished the book, I thought to myself, "The Butcher of Wall Street" is my hero.

I bought this book to find out who he is and why my fellow BRK shareholders admire him so much. He shows how to enjoy the life of an investor, where you make a positive impact on the world by recognizing your faults, building up others, and always learning.

Same as Ever reverses the process, inviting us to identify the many things that never, ever change. With his usual elan, Morgan Housel presents a master class on optimizing risk, seizing opportunity, and living your best life. CEOs, celebrities, and leaders of small countries all vied for his time and cash after he catapulted, practically overnight, onto the Forbes billionaire list. Who was this rumpled guy in cargo shorts and limp white socks, whose eyes twitched across Zoom meetings as he played video games on the side?

Story
When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

An Excellent Book About a Genius
Reviewed: 09-26-23
I highly recommend it, especially if you have positive or negative attitudes about Musk. I admit that I came in positive about him and left somewhat neutral. A few things I learned:
Musk operates as an engineer who uses businesses to solve problems. As Bob Schiller has said, “Every important issue requires financing.” Musk identifies important issues and then finds ways to finance them.
I admire his propensity to seek failure. Honestly, few people ever push themselves to their absolute limits. Musk goes way beyond his limits, fails along the way, and picks up the debris to see what we wrong.
Musk’s companies will likely experience their greatest success after he stops leading them. Throughout the book, it was clear that Musk excelled at starting businesses. In the next phase, his companies will benefit from leaders who know how to make the trains arrive on time. That’s not unique about Musk or any of his businesses. It was simply a fun thing to observe.
