About this listen

What are the secrets to a healthy, happy, and wealthy retirement?

To answer that question, longtime Morningstar columnist and podcaster Christine Benz asked 20 retirement thought leaders to go deep on a single lesson that they believe contributes to success in retirement.

These lessons range from nitty gritty financial matters to quality-of-life considerations that help pre-retirees and retirees maximize their “time on earth” allocations.

On the financial side of the ledger, the book delves into knowing your retirement income style (Wade Pfau), understanding how your spending might change in retirement (David Blanchett), and organizing your portfolio to support in-retirement cash flows (William Bernstein).

Other interviews probe softer but no less important considerations, such as how to spend in order to optimize happiness (Ramit Sethi), the value of burnishing relationships later in life (Laura Carstensen), and living life so that you have no regrets in the end (Jordan Grumet). These lessons help soon-to-retire and already-retired individuals and their advisors tackle retirement with confidence, wisdom, and a specific plan for maximizing their financial and human capital.

Had to return the audiobook

I was excited to get this book as I listen to podcasts that Christine has been interviewed on. The materials might be great and I will get the paperback book. I am only rating on the audio. The first chapter was unlistenable. There should be no reason that they should call out the narrator names when someone speaks. We understand who they are and it’s very hard to listen to that.

The names are probably auto generated and I would recommend that they take them out and republish the Audibook.

I am looking forward to getting the book though as the material is supposed to be great.

Great book but not a great listen.

Great information but very hard to listen to one of the narrators. Bought the hard cover because I want to go back through some of the chapters and can’t listen to it again.

Thought Provoking

Mrs. Benz & her colleagues have put together a very informative, and thought provoking message about securing ones financial future. I'm personally working on having a DIGNIFIED retirement in my golden years. This book is right on time for me. The last lesson with Jordan Grumet hit home for me. When I turned 49 years old, I had to take a closer look at my life. At that point I made a commitment to have a meaningful & purpose driven life. Amen!!

Terrible Narration On a Fantastic Book

The book is fantastic and I will be buying the Kindle version, but it is seriously diminished by the very poor narration. At times I wondered if Audible had just used some poor AI voice to narrate this book, but according to the description, there is actually a few humans that are reading it. None of them did a very good job and one of them was absolutely terrible. Monotone, no inflection in her voice and mispronounced basic words. The performance was one of my most disappointing Audible experiences in many, many years of listening to Audible.

The best overall look at retirement

As a financial professional (CPA) on the verge of retirement after 30+ years in practice I found this book very helpful. I utilized several specific suggestions right away and my wife and I have discussed others, a must read for anyone nearing retirement. This book brings up all the salient thinks you need to think about.

Excellent information, narration not so much

Outstanding information - as someone who recently finished my training as a financial planner after a career in medicine, the information is excellent and spot on. It offers a number of perspectives on a variety of important topics, which allow you to consider many different ideas, but may be a bit confusing if you are looking for just a single answer to a question, But that is the reality of retirement: there is no single correct answer. But the narration leaves much to be desired - it is not engaging and often rather dry. It would be far better to be done in interview style with inflection, perhaps a touch a humor, and some conversational style. But what it lacks on presentation, it wins on substance.
