Story
Comedy is king. From multimillion-dollar TV specials to sold-out stand-up shows and TikTok stardom, comedy has never been more popular, democratized, or influential. Comedians have become organizing forces across culture—as trusted as politicians and as fawned-over as celebrities—yet comedy as an art form has gone under-considered throughout its history, even as it has ascended as a cultural force.

Ugh, Lets you know he <3's abortion. SO yawn.
Reviewed: 07-24-24
First, not all comedians celebrate the abortion as good.
Norm MacDonald, one of them.
Sorry, Abortion is brutal, chemically killing a baby or pulling his legs/smashing the spine, stops him from growing up to write books to change the world.
The whole thing is POLITICS, Almost all chapters. The Politics section is I hate Trump, almost as much opinion as anything, yawn. So one sided, both sides would be bored with it. SO one sided it's like he's clueless on the other side. Has this dude never been to a drag comedy show? Talk about making fun of people that aren't in their group. Such a failure not to look at both sides.
I want my credit back. This is the racist/sexist view that the only person you can make fun of is Christian White Men. (He does make a joke against Catholics, highlights it)
The rest is good. I suspect this was written before the left turned on the Jewish community.
The last few hours is hard to listen too.

I've read or heard about the comedy lens several times, I didn't dwell on it, it didn't seem important or the persona/comedy lens seemed all grouped together like something you'll figure out way in the future.
It's explained really well here AND its explained why its useful and how to use it. Can't wait to try it.
I listen to alot of comedy books and this one seems really easy to grasp. If you listened to the UCB handbook on audible, this book gives the same informative vibe. Not as basic as Comedy Bible, but I would think a true beginner would be able to catch on to the ideas easily because it's described really well. It took me several books hearing this different ways to catch on, but this book seems to do a really good breakdown.
Great voice and entertaining voice techniques. Five and a half stars.
Love the 3 cups dropped example. Worth the $ alone if you are new.
I like that women are included alot in this book.
I would read the PDF after you listen, if you think you will listen twice. I am about to finally read the PDF and listen a third time to see what has soaked in my brain, I wish the comedy blueprint was part of the PDF, but I'm buying the next book in this series in print, and I think it will have it there. nice to learn I'm on beginning of level 3, lol. This will help me way into level 4, fingers crossed. -Cristy Le

A little political, the rest is great
Reviewed: 02-02-22
This is great. Good, Loved it. Will listen to it 3 more times as I actually work through it.
BUT, I don't know why she wastes energy on venting on the former president.
Would have liked advice on how to transition out of the pattern to sound more original once you know the rules, Everyone can't sound the same on stage.
But I have read the real book and liked it, and I recommend this AUDIBLE, way better, her expressions and notes are great.
I like her cat and dog joke, not sure all is hack?
I read and listened and now its time to do. :) Thanks. Would recommend, with the warning that political jabs are old.
Oh, and this book has a Facebook page, is great for finding a comedy buddy!

You Are (A Comedy) Special is 15-step comedic send up of a self help guide that examines Maria’s approach to stand-up in a hilarious fashion.

Very different comedy book. We needed this.

Doesn't teach you to write a joke, but teaches you comedy in her style. OMG, the character work she does in this is great. She doesn't teach it. (She should!) but still, You will leave with some of it.
at times I'm also like is this really a manual, cause it is SOOOO REAL. Not just the good stuff.
I wish I would have known that there were challenges, LIKE DO THIS NOW! stuff.
I am taking a deep breath, then trying the second one tomorrow, Today. well, this book tells you today everything is stand up. :)

I saw the interview on Hot Breath, bought the audio book and when it didn't have the PDF, I found other videos on YouTube. The three were so completely informative.
Listen to the whole thing and understand the first chapters, then go over the first chapters a few more times on fast speed. So good.
