Basic Ra Ra Message, Little Substance
Reviewed: 08-12-18
Purchased this title because I enjoy Daymond John's last title "The Power of Broke" but a few hours in of listening I found myself getting frustrated with the generic get out of bed early and work harder message repeated again and again. I kept thinking that he himself would reject this book project if someone came onto his show pitching this and he got a sample of it. From my perspective, it seems Daymond is cashing in on his fame and just churned out another self-help title, based on the likelihood it will sell because of his name and association with the Shark Tank show.
There are better titles that talk about this topic of "GRIND", for one Kevin Hart's "I Can't Make This Up" is a far better and entertaining listen. I was surprised and disappointed on this one. I would tell a friend to pass on it.

Felt Safe and Family Friendly
Reviewed: 10-26-17
This was a pleasant listen, but it felt safe. For me, the author was pleasant in sharing her story but as another reviewer wrote, felt like a family-friendly sitcom. Even during the more difficult times in her family's life, the author read it in a pleasant tone. It never felt like there was much of a struggle (at least to my ear). I came away, again like another reviewer wondering what was the point of the book? One can counter that question with not ever memoir needs to be filled with tragedy that was overcome with great effort and the lesson learned from it. I guess I anticipated more about the struggles of a middle eastern family's adapting to America's culture and likely prejudices. There was some of that, especially revolving around food. But again it was more light in nature and a bit comical.

Diane Guerrero, the television actress from the megahit Orange Is the New Black and Jane the Virgin, was just 14 years old on the day her parents were detained and deported while she was at school. Born in the US, Guerrero was able to remain in the country and continue her education, depending on the kindness of family friends who took her in and helped her build a life and a successful acting career for herself, without the support system of her family.

My Favorite Listen in 2016
Reviewed: 12-14-16
Would you consider the audio edition of In the Country We Love to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version of this book, but hard to imagine it being better than the audio version. Diane Guerrero adds soo much to this. Having her tell her own story and especially in some of the more stressful parts, you can hear her struggling with the material. Made it real and gut-wrenching.
What other book might you compare In the Country We Love to and why?
This is a hard question to answer as it's frankly an untold story. It's not a rags to riches kind of story. It was less about battling inner demons and more about a life of a family struggling to raise their children in a better place.
Which scene was your favorite?
Chapter 8 had made glued to my car seat and heart racing. I was soo anxious for her.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Papi, where are you?!?!?
Any additional comments?
This has been my favorite listen for 2016. I picked it up because I'm a fan of "Orange is the New Black". Thought it would be an entertaining listen by a 'cute' actress. It was SOO MUCH MORE than that. It was a real story of a family trying to do what they could to survive and make a better life for their children. Living in Miami, I see similar families and have wondered how they get by day to day. This book gives me new perspective, respect and support for them. I appreciate the effort and honesty Diana Guerrero put into this book.

This should be required listening for college grad
Reviewed: 04-26-16
Where does I Will Teach You to Be Rich rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I listen to these type of titles regularly. Ramit brings a fresh approach to the subject and gives very sound advise that frankly I wish I had received while in college or just after graduating. I will give this to my son and nephews, it's very valuable information. Solid A!!
What did you like best about this story?
The narration is easy to listen to and playful at times. Ramit takes a subject that can often get bogged down in terminology that requires additional research, and makes it far simpler to digest.
What about Ramit Sethi’s performance did you like?
He's quirky and his jokes while often weak are funny because they are weak and poking fun at himself and his Indian upbringing. Glad he narrated his own title, he definitely added to the enjoyment of the book.
What did you learn from I Will Teach You to Be Rich that you would use in your daily life?
There are quite a few things I took away from the book, but one that stands out is the idea of getting my son started with a credit card to help begin to build a credit score (RESPONSIBLY) so when the time comes for a major loan such a mortgage or car purchase, he will get a lower interest rate due to better credit score. I had been completely against him getting a credit card.
Any additional comments?
Ramit is very good about addressing the fact that most of us don't like to talk about personal financing and trying to understand it. He looks to make it easier to do and live with and frankly automate it and the idea of getting rich slowly, which is more realistic. Two Thumbs Up for this one!!

Story
The story of a student who went to extraordinary lengths - including living in a van on a campus parking lot - to complete his education without sacrificing his financial future. In a frank and self-deprecating voice, memoirist Ken Ilgunas writes about the existential terror of graduating from college with $32,000 in student debt. Inspired by Thoreau, Ilgunas set himself a mission: get out of debt as soon as humanly possible. To that end, he undertook an extraordinary three-year transcontinental journey.

Great Narration, Really Good Story
Reviewed: 08-18-15
What made the experience of listening to Walden on Wheels the most enjoyable?
The narration is outstanding. It made for very enjoyable listening and wanting to hear more. The story is also unique and there are real lessons to take from it. I would recommend this to a friend and especially a college student.
What does Nick Podehl bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Nick Podehi took on the characters in the book in a more engaging way than most books I've listened to in recent memories. This audio title is worth listening to just for the narration.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes and no. While I enjoyed the narration there were a few time the author got to heavy handed with the descriptions and got long in my opinion. That made me lose focus in the material.
Any additional comments?
Solid listen, may give it a second go-round. Thumbs Up!

Dee Brown's eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the 19th century uses council records, autobiographies, and firsthand descriptions. Brown allows great chiefs and warriors of the Dakota, Ute, Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes to tell us in their own words of the battles, massacres, and broken treaties that finally left them demoralized and defeated.

Interesting Subject But Narration is Speed Reading
Reviewed: 08-10-15
Would you try another book from Dee Brown and/or Grover Gardner?
The material is solid and well researched, so would likely READ the book than listen to it.
Would you be willing to try another book from Dee Brown? Why or why not?
As mentioned, the material is very interesting, though sad. I would look for more from this author.
Would you be willing to try another one of Grover Gardner’s performances?
To be frankly honest, hated the narration of this title. It was speed reading, and just rifling though the material. I would have preferred a Native American Indian reading this at a slower pace and with more personal investment in the material.
Was Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee worth the listening time?
I have mixed feeling about this audio title. Felt it was not read well and the material was presented in a fact after fact manner. It was as if this was college text book.

Would you listen to What I Know for Sure again? Why?
I would absolutely listen to this title again. In fact planning on doing so after the book I'm currently listening to. This is simply one of the very best listens I've enjoyed since becoming an Audible member many years ago.
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed that Oprah read her own book and did with real conviction. She shares openly and covers a great deal of ground in a book that not an 8 hour plus listen.
Which character – as performed by Oprah Winfrey – was your favorite?
Oprah reads this with great energy and she pulls the listener in. Highly enjoyable!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There was a moment that definitely moved me and made me shed a few tears due to the clarity it brought. I believe each person that listens to this book will have a similar moment based on where they are in their lives.
Any additional comments?
I've listened to many books of this genre. Most are much longer and filled with fluff/filler that often gets me to drift and lose focus in listening. This is very concise and engaging. It's a fast listen. It flows very well and easily a one-sitting listen. It's very enlightening and I will listen to it again, possibly several times. Two enthusiastic thumbs up!

A Daily Log of a Food Obsession...Tiring Listen
Reviewed: 09-05-14
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I can't imagine anyone truly enjoying this book. It's a sad account of a man's obsession with food and lack of self control.
What do you think your next listen will be?
I have plenty to listen to, so have moved on already. Just starting "How I Slept My Way to the Middle".
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I don't feel Jeff Garlin detracted from the book. I always prefer when an author reads his own work. In this case, I was truly looking forward to an Actor reading his own story. Thought he'd add a great deal of fun to it. The material was just overwhelmingly repetitive and sad (in my opinion).
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Not sure as I couldn't take it anymore and gave up on the book in chapter 3. If there's a redeeming quality to this story, it may be that he was very honest in his telling of his food addiction.
Any additional comments?
I wish I 'd read some of the reviews here prior to downloading this title. The negative reviews are dead-on point (unfortunately). I often tend to dismiss the negative reviews thinking this person is just being mean and over-the-top but rarely do I give up on a book. I look for that redeeming quality to pull out for my time invested. But like a bad movie, sometimes you just have to get up and walk out on it and cut your losses.

OVERLY RELIGIOUS
- By Daniel Beaulieu on 04-28-14
A REALLY REALLY LONG SERMON - AVOID!!!
Reviewed: 08-15-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
First, be more honest in the title and add that the book is completely based on religious beliefs. The narration is poor, no energy. Far too much repetition on material covered. Information could have been provided in a much shorter time and with more enthusiasm.
Has Maximize Your Potential Through the Power of Your Subconscious Mind to Overcome Fear and Worry turned you off from other books in this genre?
Absolutely, this title was a waste of a credit/money. This is the second title I have purchased on the topic that has far too much religion as the overwhelming theme. The other title was by Ben Carson. It really bothers me when authors use general titles to disguise their religious agendas.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sean Pratt?
Being this is really a book on religious faith, any good public speaking baptist minister would have been a far better. How about Billy Crystal? I enjoyed his recent book.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
This book sparked feeling of anger initially as I felt the title is misleading. But I told myself to give it a chance to and be open to the information so as to gain something from it. But the more I listened the more I found myself tuning out. Really disappointed with the time invested in this book.
Any additional comments?
This book needs to be classified as a religious title and not Self-Help. The narrator just rambles on and on and on about essentially the same message for hours. Terrible listen! Wish I could get my money back on this one.

A Key Parents How to Book
Reviewed: 08-08-14
If you could sum up Smart Money Smart Kids in three words, what would they be?
Foundational, Structure, Principles
What was one of the most memorable moments of Smart Money Smart Kids?
When Rachel describes her college friend getting her first credit card and only planning on using it and paying off the balance every month only to have something come up unexpected and fall into the trap of just putting it on the CC and thus the cycle of debt begins. Hit close to home.
Which scene was your favorite?
This not a book with scenes as say there would be in a fiction novel. So this question may not be appropriate for this book.
But a story that stands out is Rachel shutting down her Facebook account to avoid the feeling of envy when she would see her friend's posts about vacations and recent purchases. I think that's a real problem today and it was enlightening to have someone speak about it.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The extreme reaction I had was that I saw many mistake I made with money and credit cards as I began to earn a living. It made me want to make sure to teach my son not to do the same. Valuable stuff!
Any additional comments?
I think this a great book and one every parent should listen to. If I could make a suggestion to Dave Ramsey and his daughter Rachel Cruze, it would be to spend some time talking/writing about how to begin to build wealth in more detail for young people. Introduce and explain Mutual Funds, and other savings options. Give direction on where to find more information and how to begin with little money and how to start small. Take the daunting nature of beginning to invest and make it digestible.
