About this listen

The star of Orange Is the New Black and Jane the Virgin presents her personal story of the real plight of undocumented immigrants in this country.

Diane Guerrero, the television actress from the megahit Orange Is the New Black and Jane the Virgin, was just 14 years old on the day her parents were detained and deported while she was at school. Born in the US, Guerrero was able to remain in the country and continue her education, depending on the kindness of family friends who took her in and helped her build a life and a successful acting career for herself, without the support system of her family.

In the Country We Love is a moving, heartbreaking story of one woman's extraordinary resilience in the face of the nightmarish struggles of undocumented residents in this country. There are over 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the US, many of whom have citizen children, whose lives here are just as precarious, and whose stories haven't been told.

Written with best-selling author Michelle Burford, this memoir is a tale of personal triumph that also casts a much-needed light on the fears that haunt the daily existence of families like the author's and on a system that fails them over and over.

Often narrated by the authors themselves, these audiobooks allow listeners to be immersed in each story and feel all of the raw and unfiltered emotion that comes with them.

Editorial Review

Orange Is the New Black’s firecracker star, Diane Guerrero, details her life and accentuates the connection between her and undocumented immigrants across America. As an American citizen, Guerrero took advantage of the cards she was dealt and rose above her adversities.
Diane Guerrero is a beloved actress widely known for her role in Orange Is the New Black, the award-winning Netflix series that propelled much of the cast to new heights in stardom. A Colombian-American and one of the "lucky" few American citizens in her family, she's toughed out several life blips that are all too common in the immigrant community. InThe Country We Love: My Family Divided recounts her upbringing and high school years in Boston.
Eventually, she witnessed her parents and older brother getting deported back to Colombia as a result of immigration policy - one of the U.S.'s most frustrating and heartbreaking systems to navigate. Millions of undocumented immigrants are deported back to their home countries per presidential term, and there are few recourses they can take to remain in the country. Obtaining citizenship doesn't come easily for all, and deportation is painful. Guerrero's success and her accomplished acting career are proof that it truly takes a village to raise a child, and even though immigration reform still leaves much to be desired from advocates, she brings much-needed awareness to the issue.
Perseverance prevails, and Guerrero channels that spirit throughout her story, written in collaboration with author and journalist Michelle Burford.
Guerrero's narration in this audiobook is as full of life as her character in OITNB. She offers us a humorous peek into the complexities of her development as a person despite the harrowing hardships she endured. —Audible Latino Editor.

An important story I'm so grateful was shared.

I'm a more informed American citizen with a renewed desire to be involved in the immigration conversation as a result of this heartfelt account that I fear is far more common than ANY of us image. Diane tells her story with grace and humor. Her account is personal and the reader feels that. Well written and exceptionally performed. Buy this. Now.

In the Book I Love

This book exceeded my expectations. I knew of Diane Guerrero from her roles in Orange is the New Black and Jane the Virgin and I wanted the chance to hear her story. I am so glad I got to listen to her tell her own story in her own voice. It is filled with touching ups and downs that show us why immigration reform is so crucial to the success of our country and the wellbeing of the people living here. It wasn’t a boring piece of non-fiction, but a colorful, dynamic recollection of her personal struggles. I see why her name is Guerrero, the Spanish word for warrior, because the is a strong and courageous fighter. Thank you, Diane Guerrero, for sharing your story.

Deeply moving

Deeply moving account of a harrowing childhood. Extremely happy to see her use her lucky platform to effect much-!needed change. My only negative is that at times the writing didn't sound like Diane. You could feel her voice come through in some scenes, while during others her voice was subsumed by coauthor's tone and style.

Compelling (yet very millennial) Voice

The story itself was compelling, and it was amazing to listen to Diane Guerrero speak of her experiences, through her own voice inflection. The voice was definitely millennial though, as I had to wonder on occasion if she actually wrote some of her phrasing into the text version of the book-as her voice inflection as an interjection was the only thing that made some of it work.
