Story
Meanwhile, Gillan McArdle’s academic career is ending because of one stupid lapse of judgement. Offered a short-term contract, he lands on the Hebridean island of Harris to investigate obscure animal bones. Quickly dismissing the unicorn skull as a thinly disguised fake, he can’t deny there’s something unusual about these bones. Baited by rumors of a majestic tusked horse roaming the uplands, Gill begins to suspect someone is manipulating him. As he gradually unravels the mystery of the skull, he grasps a disturbing conclusion: If this creature does exist, the evidence suggests it’s a killer.

Stuck between dual realities - charged for a murder he doesn’t recall in one and running from a maniacal billionaire who’s determined to kill him in another - Austin’s monotonous life has become an epic adventure of magic, murder, and political intrigue in both the New Republic of Galiana and the streets of Los Angeles California.

what a mess! I thought at first I just didn't like the narrator, but the story started to pick up and seemed interesting in so I stuck with it and listened all the way through. I wanted to rate it higher, because it was entertaining, but I just can't!
Like I said I did like the story but there were a lot of things that bugged me. First, the narrator! It felt like he was aiming for noir detective but all he accomplished was a rushed, nervous, suprised monotone. Now that I think about it, I have to give him some credit - hard to be suprised and monotone at the same time, not to mention all the way through!
Then, the writing! I can overlook an awkward phrase here it there. But this was Awkwardly Awkward! And I say that because that is Exactly the kind of phrase the author would use. There were wildly flying wild arrows, incomprehensible eyes looking incomprehensibly - over and over! I am almost wondering if it's not a joke I am left out on! Someone let me know if that's the case, cause if so well done sir, well done!
The deciding factor for the one star review was the ending. It is a total cliffhanger, which would be fine if there was at least something of a resolution to one of the story arcs set up, but the only thing this book managed to do was build up the dual worlds then leave us at the beginning of a scene that would have been either a good ending (tying up one of said story arcs and introducing us to the next step) or left to another book entirely. I just don't like it when an author pumps up the excitement then drops us for however long it takes (if ever!) for the next edition.
Also kinda creepy how Austin Lively (and in my mind at least, the author) view women - either they are there to dote on him, caring for his every need or they are receptacles for his manly love, just waiting for him to fill their bellies with children.

Story
When you do a good job for someone, there’s a strong chance they’ll offer you more work or recommend you elsewhere. So Daniel Mackmain isn’t particularly surprised when his boss’ architect brother asks for his help on a historic house renovation in the Cotswolds. Except Dan’s a dryad’s son, and he soon realises there’s a whole lot more going on. Ancient malice is stirring, and it has made an alliance in the modern world. The Green Man expects Dan to put an end to this threat. Seeing the danger, Dan’s forced to agree.

story OK narrator not so much!

The first book in this series was pretty good and I was excited to get more into this world with the second book but the narrator change really ruined our for me! He took a guy who is supposed to be super manly and made him doing like a snobbish whiney loser! The plot was pretty slow to reveal itself and would have been more interesting to me if it tied to the first story more but it was ok. Will give this series a chance to redeem itself but definitely disappointed with this book!
