Story
When Milla accepts an off-season invitation to Le Rocher, a cozy ski resort in the French Alps, she's expecting an intimate weekend of catching up with four old friends. It might have been a decade since she saw them last, but she's never forgotten the bond they forged on this very mountain during a winter spent fiercely training for an elite snowboarding competition. Yet no sooner do Milla and the others arrive for the reunion than they realize something is horribly wrong.

Not thrilling.

The premise is great, but the story is boring, the characters are all terrible and for a murder mystery, the main character is very very dumb.

Five days ago, the epidemic of rage began. Four days ago, the rash of senseless murders swept the nation. Three days ago, the president addressed the country and begged for peace—even as the murders increased tenfold. Two days ago, the killers began to mobilize. One day ago, the power went out. And tonight, the killers are reading the names of those to be killed over the Emergency Broadcast System.

A very rough novel. Difficult to listen to if you’re used to current Blake Crouch.
Reviewed: 01-07-25
This whole book reads like a rough draft that was never edited. The pacing is both breakneck and plodding at the same time. Scott Brick is fine as a narrator but he does nothing to elevate the prose. Save your time and read a later book by crouch like “abandon” or “Dark Matter”

Story
Psychologist Dr. Ophelia Bray has dedicated her life to the study and prevention of ERS—a space-based condition most famous for a case that resulted in the brutal murders of twenty-nine people. When she's assigned to a small exploration crew, she's eager to make a difference. But as they begin to establish residency on an abandoned planet, it becomes clear that crew is hiding something. While Ophelia focuses on her new role, her crewmates are far more interested in investigating the eerie, ancient planet and unraveling the mystery behind the previous colonizer's hasty departure.

First, if you’re looking for a good sci fi novel this isn’t it.
If you’re looking for a good horror novel, this isn’t it.
The idea is interesting, but the story takes way too long to do way too little. Do not recommend.

Police Officer Jack Wardsley's life ended the moment his partner died, stabbed to death by a deranged druggie. Now, years later, Jack is a changed man, with a head full of secrets driving him insane. His recent record of police brutality and a reputation for not following the rules has prompted his seniors to give him an ultimatum: take a few weeks off, relax, and find some way to let go of all the anger - or else find another job.

The main character is a homicidal idiot
Reviewed: 01-02-24
The premise is great. But the main character is an idiot. The author is not interested in exploring the setting or set up in the least.
I had to come back to this and edit my review. Spoiler warning.
The main character is a police detective who does no detecting. On top of thinking that UK police officers aren’t as noble as American officers because they aren’t allowed to shoot criminals, the majority of the book is spent with him being lied to by one character after another and uncritically believing all of them. I can’t picture another book this year being worse than this.

Story
A trip to the grocery store changed my life. That's where I bumped into my "straight" coworker and good friend, Jake Perez. I decided to invite him to my book club night, not realizing the chain of events that invite would kick off. Immediately our chemistry became too explosive, making our friendship and work relationship complicated. That same night, a bloody package addressed to me lands on my doorstep. Falling for Jake was never in the plans—then again neither was being targeted by a dangerous stalker. This was going to be interesting.

Overall a fun book. The characters could be more developed, but aren’t bad for the genre. The mystery isn’t really a mystery at all. The narrators do a serviceable job.

Story
Odessa Hardwicke's life is derailed when she's forced to turn her gun on her partner, Walt Leppo, a decorated FBI agent who turns suddenly, inexplicably violent while apprehending a rampaging murderer. The shooting, justified by self-defense, shakes the young FBI agent to her core. Devastated, Odessa is placed on desk leave pending a full investigation. But what most troubles Odessa isn't the tragedy itself - it's the shadowy presence she thought she saw fleeing the deceased agent's body after his death.

Great concept and a fun read
Reviewed: 11-05-23
The idea of a paranormal investigator working with a modern FBI agent is great. But the investigation takes up little of the story and it feels like the authors were trying to set up a mystery that never materializes.
Overall, the novel feels like the first episode of a TV series. Nothing is resolved and while it’s fun to read, the story left me feeling “hollow”.

Story
Ten years ago, six friends went on vacation. One made it out alive... In that instant, college student Quincy Carpenter became a member of a very exclusive club - a group of survivors the press dubbed “The Final Girls”: Lisa, who lost nine sorority sisters to a college dropout's knife; Sam, who endured the Sack Man during her shift at the Nightlight Inn; and now Quincy, who ran bleeding through the woods to escape the massacre at Pine Cottage. Despite the media's attempts, the three girls have never met.

Terrible.
Reviewed: 11-04-23
The narrators delivery is bland and boring, but serviceable.
The book is truly awful. Characters are meant to have flaws but no one in this book acts in a consistent manner. The main character especially is so inconsistent that the story is frustrating. The twists are visible from a mile away. The story only has about six actual characters so guessing who is the real killer is very easy. As a reader you spend the next hundred pages waiting for the characters to catch up.

The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, an Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

My main complaint is that the first 200 pages (7 hours or so) is filled with the main characters getting set up for the story. The previous books took less time to set up.
Performance continues to be amazing.

The Divide. It’s the edge of the universe. Now, it’s collapsing - and taking everyone and everything with it. The only ones who can stop it are the Sentinels - the recruits, exiles, and court-martialed dregs of the military. At the Divide, Adequin Rake commands the Argus. She has no resources, no comms - nothing, except for the soldiers that no one wanted.

I was a excited for this book, seeing it recommended from tik tok as a new replacement for the expanse. This ain’t it.
The performances are good, but the story is poorly paced, the science is essentially magic with no grounding in reality, and the military aspect is so thin it might as well not be there.
I came for the interesting idea of the Night’s Watch in space and was disappointed at every turn.
