Although clearly intended for a youth audience intereted in how to organize Youth Guardian groups worldwide, “We Rise” also includes Xiuhtescatl’s own unforgettably inspiring personal story as the youngest person ever to address the UN General Assembly; remarkable interviews with the world’s leading climate change advocates; and many pages of genuine wisdom —this kid has an old soul!—for anyone of any age involved in the climate justice movement. I’ve been at this game a very long time myself, yet still found the book inspiring, thought-provoking, empowering, hopeful, wise, and provocative.

Ultra-violent but memorable

I heard Bacigalupi interviewed on Denver's local NPR station and fell head over heels for the Cli-fi premise right away. The plot twists are intense and unpredictable. Nothing in that interview, however, prepared me for the flood of graphic violence in this novel. Don't get me wrong: the lessons the book teaches are worth learning; and the dystopic future it foretells for the desert Southwest is all but certain to come to pass if we don't wake up soon. Bravo to Bacigalupi for all that. Indeed other regions of the planet already crushed byc limate-driven drought and consequent civil collapse (Southern Sudan, or Syria, for example) are every bit as brutal, violent, and chaotic as the Western future imagined here. That said I still ended up feeling that a rather large part of the violence was purely gratuitous in the same way that Hollywood sci-fi action flick blockbusters often become. Who knows? Maybe a movie contract is even what Bacigalupi is gunning for. If so, that film would make Mad Max look like the tooth fairy. Excellent nuanced voice narration in this audible production only makes the trigger warnings all the more necessary.
