I am sad to say that I gave up on this book. The narrator of this book should be brought up on criminal charges. Just a flat never ending monotone.

How bad it was compared to The Coldest Winter Ever
Reviewed: 08-12-24
I read The Coldest Winter Ever and the other books she wrote about Midnight. This travesty of work doesn’t even come close to those other books. I would have switched to something else. But once I start one I HAVE to see it through. I will admit that I skipped some chapters. Because she was rambling on about a bunch of nothingness. The situations are too incredibly unreal. I skipped so much at the end that I have no idea how she got to being alive again after being dead. To be honest I don’t care. I’m just glad to be done with it so I can move onto something of substance.

Story
Saunders' novel fuses the narrative style of fantasy fiction with a pre-colonial, alternate Africa. Inspired by and directly addresses the alienation of growing up an African-American fan of science fiction and fantasy, which to this day remains a very ethnically homogonous genre. It addresses this both structurally (via its unique setting) and thematically (via its alienated, tribeless hero-protagonist). The tribal tensions and histories presented in this fantasy novel reflect actual African tribal histories and tensions, and provide a unique perspective to recent conflicts in Africa.

Story
The most popular and beloved American historical novel ever written, Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind is unparalleled in its portrayal of men and women at once larger than life but as real as ourselves. Now best-selling writer Alexandra Ripley brings us back to Tara and reintroduces us to the characters we remember so well: Rhett, Ashley, Mammy, Suellen, Aunt Pittypat, and, of course, Scarlett.

I listened to this book right after I finished Gone With The Wind. This book should not be connected to that classic. Unbelievable storyline. Many loose ends. If I heard her called Scarlett Darling one more time I was going to lose my mind. I probably would have taken the book better if it was a stand alone story. Connecting it to the classic was a mistake.

Iceberg Slim….We need you
Reviewed: 09-14-22
These stories are all bad. Predictable and sorry plot lines. Unbelievable schemes. They thought they were adding clever plot twists. But the twists just made me laugh at how pitiful they were. Not worth the effort. Just when I had made up my mind that I couldn’t take another story. The book mercifully came to an end. Brothers, sisters, don’t waste your time. Instead, revisit Iceberg Slim. Or Donald Goines. Better yet. Check out Sister Soulja.

Once there, he is abused by foremen, his meager savings are filched by real estate sharks, and at every turn he is plagued by the misfortunes arising from poverty, poor working conditions, and disease. Finally, in accordance with Sinclair’s own creed, Rudkus turns to socialism as a way out.

New York City in 1978 is a dirty, dangerous place to live - and die. Joey Peacock knows this as well as anybody - he has spent the last forty years as an adolescent vampire, perfecting the routine he now enjoys: womanizing in punk clubs and discotheques, feeding by night, and sleeping by day with others of his kind in the macabre labyrinth under the city's sidewalks.

The first 3/4 of the story was just ok. Typical ghetto fabulous story. But that last 1/4 of it was just tragic. I found myself wondering just how far off the rails the author would go. She did not disappoint. Had me laughing at the ridiculousness of it.
