Story
Tucked away in Siberia, there are furry, four-legged creatures with wagging tails and floppy ears that are as docile and friendly as any lapdog. But, despite appearances, these are not dogs - they are foxes. They are the result of the most astonishing experiment in breeding ever undertaken - imagine speeding up thousands of years of evolution into a few decades. In 1959, biologists Dmitri Belyaev and Lyudmila Trut set out to do just that, by starting with a few dozen silver foxes from fox farms in the USSR and attempting to recreate the evolution of wolves into dogs in real time.

Fantastic

I am so glad that I listened to this book. It was interesting on so many levels. History, genetics, behavior, devotion, dirty politics and determination to see a project through.
Chapter 5 could be its own stand-alone book. The murder of those foxes had to have been an inside job. Lesenko was dead but he had his supporters. Someone wanted to kill the project. The brutality of this world is in stark contrast with those who seek enlightenment.
I hope the authors reach out to a dog obedience organization and move to the final phase. I certain there are American trainers that would love the chance to help carry on,
What an amazing journey.

The Black Swan, Second Edition: The Impact of the Highly Improbable: With a new section: "On Robustness and Fragility"

Story
A black swan is a highly improbable event with three principal characteristics: It is unpredictable; it carries a massive impact; and, after the fact, we concoct an explanation that makes it appear less random, and more predictable, than it was. The astonishing success of Google was a black swan; so was 9/11. For Nassim Nicholas Taleb, black swans underlie almost everything about our world, from the rise of religions to events in our own personal lives. Elegant, startling, and universal in its applications, The Black Swan will change the way you look at the world.

Boring and difficult to follow
Reviewed: 12-26-23
I was told by numerous people that this was a “must” to read or listen to. It might be a good book but it sure wasn’t for me. I found it so dry that my mind wandered and frankly, the author never actually gave a definitive definition of what exactly is a black swan. The narration was as cardboard as the content itself. Not for me.

"From early childhood, often to my extreme discomfort, I was sometimes aware beyond the usual range of the five senses. I tried to ignore the implications of this awareness, but it was too insistent; so in an attempt to understand what was happening I laboriously trained the faculty of far memory. This book describes, among other things, how I did so and what happened to me as the result."

An excellent book on many levels

The premise intrigued me and I took a chance. I’m so glad I did. This is a remarkable book. It is written with depth of perspective and fantastic literary skill. This author had an interesting life and she was gifted well to share it. That she knew HG Wells (who encouraged her to write) and the immortal Arabian Horse breeder Lady Wentworth) were just two interesting journeys I took with her while reading. And then, there’s the fact that she was conscious of the ethereal world. Wow! I’m so glad I found this book. The narration is excellent. Now I want to read her “fiction.” For anyone who loves to get lost in wonder, I highly recommend this title. -KWC

Story
In his acclaimed portraits, Richard Avedon captured the iconic figures of the twentieth century in his starkly bold, intimately minimal, and forensic visual style. What Becomes a Legend Most is the first definitive biography of this luminary—an intensely driven man who endured personal and professional prejudice, struggled with deep insecurities, and mounted an existential lifelong battle to be recognized as an artist. Philip Gefter builds on archival research and exclusive interviews with those closest to Avedon to chronicle his story.

As a lifelong admirer of the works of Richard Avedon I enjoyed this book immensely. Well-researched, deeply interesting and articulately, performed.
My takeaway from the book was to never believe an Art Critic when they routinely dismiss an artist. The pain and frustration Avedon suffered by the cruel, critics and over-educated, out of touch curators who very, clearly were motivated by jealousy is palpable.
Note to all art critics - we the viewers, do not need pretentious bloviation to tell us how to see art. We see with our eyes and our minds and our hearts. Thank god that in the end Avedon received the recognition he deserved.
The legend of Richard Avedon will live on until the world is burnt to a crisp.
What a story! Thank you.

Story
The life of Princess May of Teck is one of the great Cinderella stories in history. From a family of impoverished nobility, she was chosen by Queen Victoria as the bride for her eldest grandson, the scandalous Duke of Clarence, heir to the throne, who died mysteriously before their marriage. Despite this setback, she became queen, mother of two kings, grandmother of the current queen, and a lasting symbol of the majesty of the British throne.

I’ve wanted to read this for years and finally conceded to listen on audible. I am not sorry.
Narration is excellent.
Content is so thick! Covers much more than just the creature known as “mothman.”
I did not realize the depth of phenomenon that Keel would cover. Long, before we knew of Skinwalker Ranch - the stories in this book are eerily familiar.
Keel was fascinating and I wish he were still around for a lecture circuit.
I’m going to listen to this book again, starting today.
If you are a lover of the paranormal, this recording will not disappoint.

Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

Wonderful story marred by social opinion

As a serious, horse person this is just the kind of book I look for. Yes, it is fictional but the fiction is wrapped in facts and as a lifelong, Thoroughbred lover I was “all in.” The history is great. The voices are clear the writing is good. But the author is clearly WOKE and I just hated that. It got in the way of an otherwise great story. From a reader who has lived and breathed Tbs and the horse industry for over fifty years, I can assure you, the author got the “woke part” wrong and I resent being lectured to and being grouped as a “white supremacist.”
I hope someday, someone else will write a similar story without the currently- fashionable issues that will date this telling of the great Lexington.

The long-awaited sequel to Time and Again . Si Morley is back and the world may never be the same. When Time and Again was published in 1970, it immediately developed a loyal following that has grown with each passing year. With this book, Jack Finney returned to the same magical territory and finds Ruben Prien still at work with the Project, still dreaming of altering man's fate by going back in time to adjust events... to interfere, some might say, with destiny.

Yes, there are many details!! I’m glad of it! The author did a fantastic job of setting every, scene and made the experience all the more believable. After reading the books, I had to look up the historical characters that appeared. Time travel books have become their own genre but not many are so well done. These books are good.
