Story
Stella Adler was one of the 20th Century's greatest figures. She is arguably the most important teacher of acting in American history. Over her long career, both in New York and Hollywood, she offered her vast acting knowledge to generations of actors, including Marlon Brando, Warren Beatty, and Robert De Niro. The great voice finally ended in the early 1990s. But, her decades of experience and teaching have been brilliantly captured and encapsulated by Howard Kissel, in the 22 lessons you'll hear in this audiobook.

Offensively past its prime

Arrogant, entitled, impractical piece of history. Obviously written from a place of privilege. I was extremely offended by her attack of the middle class and the way she mocks and belittles her students. if this is what acting is, let me be a hack. If I taught like this, I would rightfully be fired.

Reviewed: 01-16-23
Way too much about the study and far too little about the results of the study. a lot of very specific isolated stories and a great deal about the science of studying happiness. but the only real practical advice this book offers is that you need to have friends and you need to value the friendships and put the effort into them. Good advice but I didn't have to listen to this book for hours to get it.

lots of great advice

The steps he gives you are very clear and easy to follow. He really needs to spend less time talking about how great he is though. is someone word depressed or feeling really bad about themselves, hearing how great somebody else's life is does not help.

Epstein's Good Without God provides a constructive, challenging response to these manifestos by getting to the heart of Humanism and its positive belief in tolerance, community, morality, and good without having to rely on the guidance of a higher being.

a lot of really great and important information but I'm not sure that an audiobook is the medium best to serve it. And the narration is so monotone and dry at first I thought it was a joke. Made it hard to listen to.

Story
As a young child in North Carolina, Jacob Tobia wasn't the wrong gender, they just had too much of the stuff. Barbies? Yes. Playing with bugs? Absolutely. Getting muddy? Please. Princess dresses? You betcha. Jacob wanted it all, but because they were "a boy", they were told they could only have the masculine half. Acting feminine labelled them "a sissy" and brought social isolation. It took Jacob years to discover that being "a sissy" isn't something to be ashamed of. It's a source of pride.

he cherry pics and the last third of the book actually is very problematic. The core idea that no political party should assume support because of race or gender is extremely important. it's really important to hear the other side of all issues.

I have to admit there were times that I didn't want to listen to his voice anymore, but this is an excellent primer especially about the industry. The bits on the art and writing are just enough without being too prescriptive.
