Story
Here is a tautly paced investigation of one the 20th century's most audacious art frauds, which generated hundreds of forgeries - many of them still hanging in prominent museums and private collections today. Provenance is the extraordinary narrative of one of the most far-reaching and elaborate deceptions in art history.

Like listening to an On-Hold message at Verizon

While the story might have legs; they're quite cut off by the almost-cheery, almost-breathless narration. Quite like the message: "We're sorry to keep you waiting, your call is very important to us, we'll be with you in a moment."
Couldn't listen after a half-hour and had to return the book. Will try the Kindle edition.

More whining than insight

A long trip that goes nowhere, with a travel companion that is annoying, cloying, predictable and unnecessary. The weakest of all his books to date.

Story
The Venetians' language and way of thinking set them aside from the rest of Italy. They are an island people, linked to the sea and to the tides rather than the land. This latest work from the incomparable Peter Ackroyd, like a magic gondola, transports its listeners to that sensual and surprising city. His account embraces facts and romance, conjuring up the atmosphere of the canals, bridges, and sunlit squares, the churches and the markets, the festivals and the flowers.

An endless droning list.....
Reviewed: 03-15-11
All the magic and mystery of Venice is sucked out and left for a dying corpse by this endless and pointless book. Ackroyd merely lists and lists and lists subjects, dates, events; and exclusively by quoting other writers and authorities. Has he ever stepped foot in Venice himself? Reminiscent of a poorly documented and disorganized term paper. Back and forth through the centuries; skipping from subject to locale, with no central theme or subject to hold together.
Altogether, and huge bore, and a serious disappointment for anyone who has visited Venice and was looking for some history or story to contain the perspective of this amazing place. If you're thinking of reading/listening to this as a preparation to visiting Venice-- don't. It will only be an endless annoyance.

Story
Nearly two decades after ending his groundbreaking Tales of the City saga of San Francisco life, Armistead Maupin revisits his all-too-human hero Michael Tolliver - the 55-year-old sweet-spirited gardener and survivor of the plague that took so many of his friends and lovers - for a single day at once mundane and extraordinary...and filled with the everyday miracles of living.

Maudlin not Maupin
Reviewed: 06-24-07
The charm of the original books Tales of the City, invoked delightful characters in amusing situations; all relevant to their invented lives in 70's San Francisco. Revisiting these characters in the midst of middle age is as painful as the 20-year reunion of Dynasty. You just don't want to know that Michael Tolliver is still focused on sex, but now needs Viagra; that many of the original characters are mellowed, moved or dead. The story has absolutely no humor, quirky characters or story line that keeps one interested.... They all should have been left alone in our memories. Armistead should have found something like Viagra to excite his writing again. A major disappointment...couldn't wait to get it over with, and put the book where it rightly belongs... in the recycleables.
