Story
The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Set in the Jazz Age on Long Island, near New York City, the novel depicts first-person narrator Nick Carraway's interactions with mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and Gatsby's obsession with reuniting with his former lover, Daisy Buchanan. The novel was inspired by a romance Fitzgerald had with socialite Ginevra King, and the riotous parties he attended on Long Island's North Shore in 1922.

Thought Provoking

I read this book ahead of seeing the Broadway Play. (Highly recommend the play if you ever have the chance to see it!) I will say there were themes I missed my first time through and seeing the play made me go back and listen to it a second time. With that said, my recommendation would be researching ahead of time the reasonably is a classic to better pick up on subtle but important themes related to the American dream, patriarchy, golden age, etc.

Story
In Stop Missing Your Life, mindfulness teacher Cory Muscara takes us on a journey into the heart of what is required for real change, growth, and happiness. He exposes how the phrase "be present" has become little more than a platitude, imbued with the misguided message to be present just for the sake of being present, and reveals how to achieve true Presence: a quality of being that is unmistakably attractive about a person, and one that only comes when we've peeled back the layers of guarding that prevent us from being our full, honest, and integrated selves in the world.

I don’t know that there are words to adequately describe this book. It beautifully captures the complexity of grief and the many feelings that accompany it. Its rhythmic and poetic tone are perfection, and the narration is amazing! Highly recommend for anyone who has or is experiencing grief…it is validating and healing, and well worth the time.

Story
In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to 'bad people'" (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

I read this book after my book club read Americanh. I found the book eye-opening and instructive. While it was uncomfortable at times to listen to as a white person, I am grateful to have read it and to be better aware of how imbedded racism is in our society.

With Hope in the Dark, Rebecca Solnit makes a radical case for hope as a commitment to act in a world whose future remains uncertain and unknowable. Drawing on her decades of activism and a wide knowledge of environmental, cultural, and political history, Solnit argues that radicals have a long, neglected history of transformative victories, that the positive consequences of our acts are not always immediately seen, directly knowable, or even measurable.

I enjoyed this book as it challenged some of my perspectives and presents the problems of being puritan in ideologies. I enjoyed the author’s thoughts on needing to find a “radical center” - commonality with others who may seem diabolically opposed to one another. I also enjoyed her thoughts on hope in a new light and her assertion that pessimism and optimism can remove you from taking actual action. While my views on some things were different than the authors, I am glad that I listened for to her underlying thoughts and feel I learned valuable things by listening to this book.
