I enjoy this series and relisten to it frequently, except for this problematic story. As usual there are multiple plot lines but this story with a brutal rape with an unwilling raper, a man who shot six people and wasn't charged, and the bullying behavior by Sam as a lead up to Freddie's bachelor party are all worthy of criticism. Sometimes, Marie's attempts to provide an interesting and complex heroine get into questionable territory, and Sam becomes a cringe caricature rather than a bad ass cop. I have to skip chapters in order to follow plot lines that are crucial to the overall story.

I heard so many raving about this series and kept waiting for those moments that make a book truly memorable. They never came. The narrator was a little breathy for my taste and I finished the book with no desire to go further in the series. Maybe this was a book better read than listened to.

...made better with the narration. Between reading and listening, I have visited Abigail and Brooks' world at least a dozen times. I never fail to shudder at the beginning as the heroine gets caught in a terrible situation, laugh as Brooks and Abigail get to know each other, awkwardly on her part, relentlessly amiable on his, and sigh with satisfaction as they get their HEA. Roberts has a special touch with the characters and the scenery of the south and it shows here. And of course, it wouldn't be a Nora Roberts book without a dog you want to take home.

I have the print version of this book and love the story of a life restarted. The narrator's affected drawl was difficult to listen to. It reminded me of the rich wife on Gilligan's Island.

...of the number of times I've listened to this book. This is the only one of Ashley's books written entirely in the male point of view, and it delivers. Of all the 'Burg books, this one gives the best view of life in a small town and while the love story is central to the plot, Tanner Layne's sons, mother, and partners are woven into every piece. There's great exes from hell scenes, this is KA, and an action story, without great emotional payout at the end. I'm an Ashley fan, but this is a book that I would recommend to anyone, fan or not. Pallino does a nuanced narration, even for the female voices. Overall, a fabulous listen!

These Old Shades Audiobook By Georgette Heyer cover art

Love the story, wished for another reader

What did you love best about These Old Shades?

I'm a Georgette Heyer fan, so I am familiar with her stories. I have always enjoyed the humor she weaves into her romances. The redemption of the Duke is particularly enjoyable and satisfying.

What did you like best about this story?

Sometimes I get eager for the end of a story and chafe at the miscellaneous conversation and detail. But Heyer's details and conversation make a satisfying world to live in for just a little while.

What didn’t you like about Cornelius Garrett’s performance?

I was relieved when Mr. Garrett got rid of the lisp and affectation about one third of the way through when he was 'reading' for Justin, the Duke of Avon. When he was reading in his normal voice I enjoyed his tone, but his renderings of the voices of the other characters were jarring. Mostly my reaction was that I will avoid books read by him and dig out my old copy of These Old Shades and read it once more for myself. I will not re-listen to this audible book.

Loved this and gave it five stars! Will relisten to all except the parts on the sci-fiction summaries. I have read them and not even the professor's explanations help Perelandra.
