I hesitated to listen because I loved the others so much. But honestly, this was one of the best so far. Not only the story, but the narrator too!

This story based on real women who served in Vietnam as nurses and other support to our troops, often at great danger and hardship needed to be told. We owe them a debt of gratitude and the respect of our nation they willingly sacrificed for!

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Hooked from first paragraph to last sentence

So many years since my last favorite sci-fi/fantasy series, I was worried there wouldn’t be one… but finally this one’s got all the feels without being just the same vampire/dystopian trope of all the sub par copycats. 4th Wing is fresh, original, and utterly engrossing. Don’t let complaints about the narrator put you off bc the narration was great with distinction between characters, great tempo and cadence for building suspense and/or anticipation without being overly pedantic. Pretty steamy sex scenes and language for teen readers but it’s going to be hard for them to resist bc the story line is so good. I think publishing a YA version would capture that audience and they can read or listen to the explicit version when they are more mature.

Reviewed: 10-04-23
This stand alone novel by Dervla McTiernan was an enjoyable build up to a gripping finish! The storyline was believable without too much contrived plot to force the narrative and with likable characters. I thought it was a great blend of getting to know each character’s backstory, plus their unique dilemmas with perfect pacing, I felt invested in the characters, and great narration to reflect each one’s unique personality! More Dervla McTiernan please!!

Story
Ten years ago, sisters Olivia and Melanie Greene were on a backcountry hiking trip when their parents were in a fatal car accident. Over the years, they grew apart, each coping with the loss in her own way. Olivia plunged herself into law school, work, and a materialist view of the world - what you see is what you get, and that's all you get. Melanie dropped out of college and developed an online life-coaching business around her cafeteria-style spirituality - a little of this, a little of that, whatever makes you happy.

Story
Robin Windsor has spent most of her life under an assumed name, running from her family's ignominious past. She thought she'd finally found sanctuary in her rather unremarkable used bookstore just up the street from the marina in River City, Michigan. But the store is struggling and the past is hot on her heels. When she receives an eerily familiar book in the mail on the morning of her father's scheduled execution, Robin is thrown back to the long-lost summer she met Peter Flynt, the perfect boy who ruined everything.

I listen to 4-5 audiobooks per month and was re-listening to some old favorites because I couldn’t find anything new worth listening to when I can across The Girl in the Painting. The story is so good, the characters and plot so well developed, the history well researched and the story and mystery well paced and plausible. I wouldn’t call it a thriller, but there is a mystery in the storyline that is finely drawn. I have already downloaded another novel by the author!
