Story
A landslide has closed the Korowai Pass on New Zealand’s South Island, cutting off the town of Thorndike and leaving a sizable farm abandoned. The disaster presents an opportunity for Birnam Wood, an undeclared, unregulated, sometimes-criminal, sometimes-philanthropic guerrilla gardening collective that plants crops wherever no one will notice. For years, the group has struggled to break even. To occupy the farm at Thorndike would mean a shot at solvency at last. But the enigmatic American billionaire Robert Lemoine also has an interest in the place.

Engaging story cut a bit short
Reviewed: 04-27-24
The narrator and story were engaging. I was even rooting for the flawed characters. I enjoyed it immensely until it ended rather too abruptly for my taste.

Story
Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to become Southern California’s first giraffes. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

Oh what a journey…
Reviewed: 02-07-23
I was grabbed by the story from the first lines. I will recommend it to anyone who asks. The narrator was fine for the period in which the story was set, good because he’s not my favorite. Good enough to keep me tuned in. This is a feel-good story about a journey with just enough action and good Samaritan’s to keep one wondering what will happen next.

Narration awkward but story is good
Reviewed: 09-29-18
It took a while to get used to the awkward narration. Ms. Flosnik’s voices makes the characters seem artificial. It was hard to really care about anyone. The story had a nice call-back to the Lady Julia Gray series, also by Deanna Raybourn, which I enjoyed more than this book. I’m not sorry to have listened, but it wasn’t great.

Story
After seeing her maybe-mobster boss murder a guy, Delaney James assumes a new identity and pretends to be a mail order bride. She finds her groom-to-be living in a town that celebrates Halloween every day. Weird. But not as weird as what she doesn't know. Her groom-to-be is a 400-year-old vampire.

Delicious, but not heavy

This is the first installment in a light-hearted paranormal romance series. I enjoyed it in the same vein as the Royal Spyness mysteries. There is a full cast of characters, and enough plot to pull you along without getting lost.

Story
Amelia Peabody embarks on her first Egyptian adventure armed with unshakable self-confidence, a journal for her thoughts, and, of course, a sturdy umbrella. On her way, she rescues Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been "ruined" and abandoned on the streets of Rome by her lover. With a typical disregard for convention, Amelia promptly hires her fellow countrywoman as a companion and takes her to Cairo, where strange visitations and a botched kidnapping convince Amelia that there is a plot afoot to harm Evelyn.

Fine, but not my cup of tea
Reviewed: 04-20-15
The story was okay, but I thought it was a bit long in descriptions and short on action, or even introspection. The performance was semi-melodramatic, while technically well done. In the end I finished it to get my money's worth, although I had figured out "who done it" and why by mid way through.
