Story
Imagine a 1980s world of sumptuous hotel rooms, restaurants, New York City penthouses, and the powerful men who move easily between these pinnacles of luxury. They are music producers, rock stars, writers, and restaurateurs. They are household names like Billy Joel, Art Garfunkel, Eric Clapton, and Sting. And yet, each man has an entire aspect to his life that he doesn’t talk about publicly—his depression, his rocky marriage, his feelings of shame and failure, his private loss of faith. And now: The phone rings. Imagine the woman who has each of these men at her beck and call.

This was so good! I came into Audible looking for a completely different kind of book and saw the image and ad for this and decided to explore what it was about. I happened to accidentally start the title playing in the cloud player and before I knew it, literally within a couple of minutes, I was sucked in. Such a great format, the way the story is presented, especially with such a stellar cast of actors! I finished listening in about 4.5 hours—considering the title was released today it’s clear that I was unable to “put it down.” Wonderful job to all who worked to create this! I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys literally any type of story!

Finally! A good story from Kate Noble! This book started after my last purchase ended, and I hadn’t realized until the 2nd chapter that it was the sequel to another of her books I had to stop listening to because it was so god-awful boring. This book however, was surprisingly really good, and I was always looking forward to coming back to listen to more. Despite the main female character being unlikable from both the previous novel and from the start of this one, I was still curious about her story and where it would end up. Her male counterpart lead was also a character that was thankfully very likeable and compelling, unlike in the previous novel whose male lead bored me to absolute tears. Give this a chance, and you should entertained and satisfied at the very least. And thankfully, you don’t have to read or even know about the prequel to enjoy this one!

I don’t even know where to begin. There were enough tolerable parts that I kept listening. I liked Dominic’s voice and in general his personality though sometimes he was condescending towards Grace which was obnoxious, though not as obnoxious as she was as a character to begin with. Her personality was so inconsistent, and she was also incredibly infuriating, especially when talking to a couple of the antagonists in the book—imagine telling the burglar “I don’t have a weapon and can’t defend myself but I’m going to tell in you.” Like, she was such a moron at times and it’s like, duh, you’re putting yourself in a terrible situation, you stupid idiot, stop talking!
The other issue with this book was that it took place over the course of about 2 weeks so everything just DRAGGED because nothing happened!! Every day took forever to explain and it wasn’t always interesting. Like some weird, leisurely conversations all the time, just with no point or much substance. The “BIG DEAL” that everyone was waiting for flopped and became completely anticlimactic once it happened and another event that was actually major wasn’t given it’s just desserts! I honestly can’t believe that this book was published in this state but gives me hope for my own amateur writing…

Oh my god, this was SO so good!! I was laughing out loud from the 1st chapter, and throughout the whole book, I couldn’t believe it! Anne Gracie really outdid herself with the story, jam packed with the drama and romance we love from her, with tons of well written lines, a well thought out and illustrated plot, and diverse and compelling characters. The narrator as well did an excellent job and it’s in part due to her reading of the lines that the humor came across so well. Brava, Anne Gracie! I only wish I hadn’t finished this so quickly because now I have nothing left to read!

It might even call for an innocent and necessary deception.

God, this is JUST terrible!!! I had to stop listening with over 10 hours left because the story is just so MINDNUMBINGLY BORING!! The narrator is great, I loved her reading Anne Gracie’s Bride series but WOW is she not even able to make this book bearable. I completely zoned out for the intro chapter about the lead male (Jack/Jackson) because it was just the worst, painfully boring description of sea life and who knows what else that I’ve ever heard! And there’s way too much of the same sentiments being relayed over and over regarding his feelings about the main female (Sarah) and how he clearly doesn’t think highly of her because she’s acting like a B, but it’s obvious that they will end up falling for each other, no doubt inexplicably, but I cannot listen any longer to wait to hear how it happens and quite frankly the story is so bad right now that I really could care less. I may try this author again because she’s had such positive reviews but woof—I hope her other books are much better!

Just LOVE
Reviewed: 09-15-21
I’m writing this review after not having recently read the book, but because I love it so much that when I saw it in the list of the Author’s books while looking to see if there was anything new, I decided to look at the reviews to read what other like minded readers thought, and realized there were too many negative reviews to let my own one of praise go unwritten.
When I think about this book, I get a little sad/nostalgic, and warm inside, with a slight shiver down my spine. This book has so many levels that I completely didn’t expect, and I listened to it a few times because it was so compelling, appreciating something new with each listen. It was truly heartbreaking to hear of the hardships the sirens faced in their human lives as well in the current one of the main character. I empathized with her as she fell in love, actually feeling the heartwarming emotions myself, which is part of the reason why I think the story is so well written. I almost wish I could meet her love interest in real life myself to have a chance with!
The lore of the sirens given and their necessary life actions still give me chills, because for a YA novel I would say it’s a lot darker than I would have expected, but still made sense for the story and was relayed well.
I had no problem at all with the narrator and think her voice and the way she read the story, adjusted her tonality, and in general acted out the lines was really well done, and it was also easy to distinguish the characters when she spoke for them.
Go in with an open mind and give this book a good listen and I’ll be shocked if you don’t think it’s one that stays with you and is worth coming back to for a future re-read/listen!

Worst Narrator Ever
Reviewed: 08-23-21
I’m am so annoyed that this narrator was chosen for this book, especially after having finished the excellent seasonal Bride series by Anne Gracie. The only reason I was able to get through listening to this book was because I had listened to it once before (when desperate for more of Anne Gracie’s books and during a free Romance package trial) and knew this time to expect a reprisal of Daisy Chance’s role and her part in the story which I was very excited about. If not for that, I would have stopped listening and returned this book to get my credit back.
The narrator has the worse way of reading a story that I’ve ever heard. Very stilted and choppy speech, terrible accent, and obnoxious pronunciation for a start (“shed” for she’d, “ladiss” for ladies, etc.). She made Cal’s friend sound so old with the voice she used I was shocked to discover he was like in his 20s or 30s and not in his 60s or 70s. She’s literally just the worst. I’m SO glad the remaining books in this series aren’t narrated by her otherwise I think I’d give up regardless of my interest in knowing what happens with these characters.

Terrible
Reviewed: 06-06-16
Sorry this is the only word that comes to mind but from the moment the reader began I was disappointed. It sounded like being at a bad poetry reading. The problem is that she read the narrators words, instead of acting them, being them, living them. It sounded insincere half the time or else just lacking in passion and conviction for the character's thoughts/being.
For a while I thought it was just the poor reading that was making the story annoying (since I was actually very excited about the plot and to see how it progressed), but about 3/4 of the way through I was able to see the author's words for what they were and finally decide that the writing itself was not very good either. There were many moments in the story where the characters talked through an issue for way too long, slightly changing the wording of their same argument. It was exhausting. The female protagonist as well was incredibly underwhelming, being essentially spineless and completely lacking in power until a moment at the end when she was finally forced to make an obvious and important/critical decision. She was unimpressive to say the least and the antagonists were definitely meow interesting characters. I think this story had a lot of potential, it just needed some more thinking through and better editing for conciseness and flow.
