Story
Masterfully blending elements of psychological suspense and true crime, Jessica Knoll—bestselling author of Luckiest Girl Alive and the writer behind the Netflix adaptation starring Mila Kunis—delivers an “unflinching and evocative” (Laura Dave, New York Times bestselling author) thriller in Bright Young Women. The book opens on a Saturday night in 1978, hours before a soon-to-be-infamous murderer descends upon a Florida sorority house with deadly results. The lives of those who survive, including a sorority president and key witness, Pamela Schumacher, are forever changed.

New take on an old crime
Reviewed: 10-28-23
This was an excellent read. Sutton Foster’s narration was easy to listen to and perfect for the tone of the novel. Such an interesting POV-written from the perspective of women impacted by Ted Bundy’s horrible crimes.

Story
It’s been a minute—or five years—since Jordan Vargas last saw his college friends, and twenty-eight years since their graduation from Berkeley when their adult lives officially began. Now Jordan, Jordy, Naomi, Craig, and Marielle find themselves at the brink of a new decade, with all the responsibilities of adulthood, yet no closer to having their lives figured out. Though not for a lack of trying. Over the years they’ve reunited in Big Sur to honor a decades-old pact to throw each other living “funerals,” celebrations to remind themselves that life is worth living.

I expected this book to be dark and depressing. Instead, it is a beautiful story of friendship and living our best lives. I loved it.

Story
When Kitty Karr Tate, a White icon of the silver screen, dies and bequeaths her multimillion-dollar estate to the St. John sisters, three young, wealthy Black women, it prompts questions. Lots of questions. A celebrity in her own right, Elise St. John would rather focus on sorting out Kitty’s affairs than deal with the press. But what she discovers in one of Kitty’s journals rocks her world harder than any other brewing scandal could—and between a cheating fiancé and the fallout from a controversial social media post, there are plenty.

Terrible narration
Reviewed: 05-13-23
The narration for Kitty is easy to follow and understand, but the narration for Elise is horrible. Strange pauses, no emphasis for a change in emotion. Thankfully most of the middle of the book is told from Kitty’s perspective but the end is painful to get through.

I really enjoyed half of this book. The Kitty parts of this book are interesting and well written. The Elyse parts seems like they are written by a different author. The narration is choppy, and there are awkward pauses, which made the story told from Elyse’s POV difficult to follow.

William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

This might be my new favorite book. Beautiful story of a complicated family and the love of sisters. The narration is a little rocky at first-some awkward pauses-but as the story continues, the narration improves. Outstanding novel!

Story
After years of hiding her addiction from everyone—stockpiling pills in her Louboutins and elaborately scheduling her withdrawals between PTA meetings, baby showers, and tennis matches—Laura Cathcart Robbins is running out of places to hide. She has learned the hard way that even her high-profile marriage and Hollywood lifestyle can’t protect her from the pain she’s keeping bottled up inside. Facing divorce, the possibility of a custody battle, and the insistent voice of internalized racism that nags at her as a Black woman in a white world, Laura wonders just how much more she can take.

Loved this book and I’m glad the author chose to record it. Her road to recovery reminds us there is no right way to get sober. Laura broke so many of the “rules” and was still able to find her peace. I hope she writes more books in the future! I bought the book on Holly’s recommendation, and she never misses.

I always love these kind of books but this was the exception. Long and drawn out-I thought the story about her father was compelling but the end lacks a resolution and it seems rushed after a boring module section during which nothing much happens.

Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul.

This book is beautifully narrated and written. I cried at the end not only because it is so touching but
also because I didn’t want it to end. I wish JK Simmons was playing this character in the movie because he really captured the essences of this curmudgeon. I loved Backman’s “Anxious People”, as well.
