About this listen

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Book Lovers and Beach Read comes a sparkling novel that will leave you with the warm, hazy afterglow usually reserved for the best vacations.

Two best friends. Ten summer trips. One last chance to fall in love.

Poppy and Alex. Alex and Poppy. They have nothing in common. She’s a wild child; he wears khakis. She has insatiable wanderlust; he prefers to stay home with a book. And somehow, ever since a fateful car share home from college many years ago, they are the very best of friends. For most of the year they live far apart—she’s in New York City, and he’s in their small hometown—but every summer, for a decade, they have taken one glorious week of vacation together.

Until two years ago, when they ruined everything. They haven't spoken since.

Poppy has everything she should want, but she’s stuck in a rut. When someone asks when she was last truly happy, she knows, without a doubt, it was on that ill-fated, final trip with Alex. And so, she decides to convince her best friend to take one more vacation together—lay everything on the table, make it all right. Miraculously, he agrees.

Now she has a week to fix everything. If only she can get around the one big truth that has always stood quietly in the middle of their seemingly perfect relationship. What could possibly go wrong?

Critic reviews

“What Henry is especially skilled at is writing dialogue. The banter between Poppy and Alex is so natural, quick and witty that it would make Shonda Rhimes do a slow clap.” (The Associated Press)

“The strength of People We Meet on Vacation [is] the clever observations, the dialogue (which is laugh-out-loud funny) and, most particularly, the characters. Funny and fumbling and lovable, they’re most decidedly worth the trip." (The Wall Street Journal)

“Henry’s biggest strength is in the sparkling, often laugh-out-loud-funny dialogue, particularly the banter-filled conversations between Poppy and Alex. The end result is a story that pays homage to classic romantic comedies while having a point of view all its own. A warm and winning When Harry Met Sally update that hits all the perfect notes.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Witty, laugh out loud fun

Loved this book. Julia Whelan always knocks it out of the park with narration so thats a given. The story here was unique and kept me interested and engaged the whole time, forever teasing the inevitable. The characters (namely Poppy) were PHENOMENAL and I wish I could be friends with, well, almost all of them -never have I wanted to spend time with a fictional person so much as I do Poppy. She would make an excellent travel companion!
This was the first book by Emily Henry I have read/listened to, but after devouring every witty word, I will definitely be going back to check out her other books!

It's a nice story

It's a nice story, but it flips too much to the past then present found it hard to follow sometimes. There were some parts a actually fell asleep but even though I dosed off for 15 to 20 min I didn't miss anything they were still stuck in the same issue so there was no need to rewind.

So good

This is the first book I have read where I actually laughed out loud. Poppy and Alex have the best sense of humor. Narration was excellent!

didn't like main character

Meh. Main character seemed bratty and shallow, so I wasn't rooting for her and the story had no surprises. Decent listen but I wouldn't recommend.

Wow, just wow

I wasn’t sure how I would like Alex at first, definitely not something I’m used to, the best friends trope with the boy being awkward and stiff and the girl being the opposite. But I absolutely loved it. It was long and definitely is a slow burn. Some people may not like that, but I understand the reason for it. There is existing history with the characters, best friends for like 12 years. So I get the need to build up slowly and explain every summer and their relationship first before advancing it. This book was funny and their conversations seemed so natural and playful, they honestly were a great match for each other. Not every book zones in and focuses on conversation the way this one does. It really helps to showcase of meaningful their friendship is. I loved the writing of the book too, it feels a lot like a friend telling me a story rather than an author writing a book, and that worked well for this.

The narrator was great, amazing. She conveyed every emotion during every conversation perfectly. That end speech with Alex being afraid? She nailed that perfectly. I was really able to envision everything really well. I wasn’t too happy with how she voiced Alex though, the voice made it hard for me to take him seriously/he sounded super nerdy, which I guess was the point. I just wasn’t fond of it, but it worked well and honestly didn’t effect me too bad as I continued the book.

Definitely spend your credits on this one, it may be a slow burn but the final scene in the parking lot makes it all well worth it. I even teared up a little. The narrator made the book even better, perfect even. Nothing else to say other than to listen to it and be prepared to go through 12 years of friendship with Alex and Poppy.

Great Listen!

It's all about the people who we meet while on vacation, isn't it? I proved this on my trip to Mexico this summer. Emily Henry's novel came with me to Mexico, and it was BECAUSE of the people I met on vacation that I didn't read a lick of it! After I returned back home, I completely devoured this book!! I had high hopes after reading Beach Read, and I wasn't let down. This book was every bit as magnetic, pulling me in and not letting go! The intertwined past and present story lines were helpful at building up and explaining the relationship between Poppy and Alex. I found all of the characters endearing and although flawed, relatable! The love scenes...hot, hot, HOT!! I appreciate love scenes that are not raunchy and tasteless. I half read and half listened to it, and there is just something about Julia Whelan's voice to make the love scenes work! The only problem I had was wanting to know what happens in the next decade or so...possible sequel? I hope so! Loved this book and will recommend to my friends and followers!

Cute and quick

I really loved the characters and how the narrator brought them to life. Alex and Poppy were incredibly relatable and their interactions made me smile. I read this because I loved the author’s other book Beach Read. I thought this was similarly written and enjoyable but slightly less engaging than Beach Read. Still would recommend for a casual read !

Wow….what a great book.

I wasn’t sure I would like this book as I’m usually a mystery/suspense girl. The story kept me interested and enjoy it the whole way through.

A bit too Harlequin for most!

Slow, repetitive love story. Can you spell Y-A-W-N???? Make it much much shorter, could be told in a few chapters
