Distinguished Yale historian Henry Ashby Turner Jr. makes an important and influential addition to his lifelong study of Nazi Germany. Hitler's Thirty Days to Power paints vivid portraits of the main players in the drama of January 1933 and, using newly available documents, masterfully recreates the bewildering circumstances surrounding Hitler's unexpected appointment as chancellor of Germany. The result is a work that Booklist calls "first rate...a gripping, foreboding narrative."

This is a must read for anyone with a thirst for history of this time period. This book, as the
title suggests deals with the events and characters in the immediate run up to Jan 30th, 1933. The reader will learn how literally right up to very moment Hitler was chosen to be Chancellor the history of the world could have easily changed. Hitler did not by his "iron will", beat down an old dithering Hindenburg into submission. Not at all. Hitler was not swept into power by a tidal wave German masses. In fact, in the nation election just held days before his appointment, 2 out of every 3 voting Germans voted against Hitler.
So how did it happen. How did Hitler rise to power in just 30 days. Listen to this book.
5 stars go to the narrator Paul Boehmer. Bravo sir, well done

This is a concise history of the Night Of The Long Knives June 30th 1934, where Adolph Hitler decided to kill Ernst Rohm leader of the German SA along with approx 1000 of Rohm's followers. The "Rohm Purge" as it became known, triggered a turning point in
Nazi history. Rohm was once a close friend and confidant of Hitler but the two became estranged as Hitler gined more and more power. This book explains the rift between the two men.World history as we know it took a bloody turn on that decisive day.
This is a short book approximately 90 minutes long but well worth the listen.

In a lifetime shaped by politics, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proved himself a master manipulator of Congress, the press, and the public. But when war in Europe and Asia threatened America's shores, FDR found himself in a world turned upside down, where his friends became his foes, his enemies his allies. To help wage democracy's first "total war", he turned to one of history's most remarkable triumvirates.

I do not hand out 5 stars to every book. In order for a book to be a 5 star you must be
teleported to where the story is being told and you become engrossed in what is happening
around you. You must live the story rather then just witness it. This is why Ameridan
Warlords gets 5 stars from me.
This book is the telling of WW2 from the perspective of the major policy players. Roosevelt Marshal, King, Stimson, Ickies and others. As Hitler takes power in 1933, Roosevelt knows
that a distant storm is coming Wrapped in the throws of the depression, Roosevelt has the vision to jump start the American manufacturing war machine to keep Great Briton afloat.
This book is a must read for the WW2 history buff. Where the book loses one star in performance is the mispronunciation of key names and cities. Missing from this book is any discussion of Harry Hopkins, one of Roosevelt's closest advisers I wonder at this omission

An insightful historical account, Democrat and Diplomat exposes the dark underbelly of 1930s Germany and explores the terrible burden of those who realized the horror that was to come. Dodd was the U.S. Ambassador to Germany from 1933 to 1937, arriving in Berlin with his wife and daughter just as Hitler assumed the chancellorship. An unlikely candidate for the job - and not President Roosevelt's first choice - Dodd quickly came to realize that the situation in Germany was far grimmer than was understood in America.

I had previously read In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson. I had totally enjoyed the book
I then see this book on the new release list and bought it hoping to learn more about William Dodd.
What a mistake. This book is extremely boring. Prior to his posting in Berlin, Amb. Dodd was a history professor who moonlighted as a political speech writer. He must have written for every unknown democrat on the east coast, and this book tries painfully to recount them all.
You find yourself saying that the book will pick up when we get to Berlin. It doesn't.
Read Erik Larson's book and pass on this

In the series' first volume, Interpreting American History: The Age of Andrew Jackson, experts on Jacksonian America address the changing views of historians over the past century on a watershed era in U.S. history. A two-term president of the United States, Jackson was a powerful leader who widened constitutional boundaries on the presidency, shaping policy himself instead of deferring to the wishes of Congress.

Reviewed: 12-28-14
Andrew Jackson always interested me but I never purchased any books about him. All my prior readings on him were only chapters of larger books. I listened to the demo for this book and decided to jump on in.
Buyer beware. This is not an easy book to listen to. This book is more on the level of a doctorate thesis. You should have a solid grounding in the life and times of Jackson in order to enjoy this book. In addition, you should also have extensive knowledge about past historians and their views as this book is a comparative study
Recommended only for the master level and above student

Good book that is hampered by poor audio. John Mayer does a fine job reading this book to us. His style and delivery make this an easy and fun book to listen to. The problem is with the audio quality ( or lack of it ). This sounds more like a high school project rather then a historical thesis.
The "sthick" for this book is that it concerns itself with little know information abut Hitlers llfe and personality. Examples of this are that other books tell of Hitler being a vegetarian but this book tells us how this came to be. There are parts of this book that I dismiss such as the topic of Hitler's sexuality. Somehow, I cant picture this in my mind as described by the author.
I personally would have liked this book to be longer. The book seems to deal heavily with pre-war Hitler but then races to the end for the time frame 1940 - 1945.
This book is recommended for the WWII buff.

General George S. Patton, Jr., died under mysterious circumstances in the months following the end of World War II. For almost 70 years, there has been suspicion that his death was not an accident - and may very well have been an act of assassination. Killing Patton will take listeners inside the final year of the war and recount the events surrounding Patton's tragic demise, naming names of the many powerful individuals who wanted him silenced.

A good book with alot of flaws
Reviewed: 09-24-14
Killing Patton is Bill O's latest 'fast food style' book in the Killing series. Preceded by Killing Lincoln, Kennedy and Jesus, Patton has some tall expectations to live up to.
Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard release a historical book every year and Patton is 2014's edition. All books are written in the same format so if you enjoyed the previous three installments, you will enjoy this book. It is an easy book to listen to. Add on top of that the fact that I'm a WW2 history buff made this book a must purchase for me.
THIS BOOK IS NOT WITHOUT ITS FAULTS
The first chapter of this book deals with Patton's automobile accident and subsequent death. You already know the ending before the second chapter begins. For me, it is anticlimactic
The rest of the book ping pongs back and forth through the final year of WW2. This book is not a thesis on the late General as the title suggests but more a weak melodrama. There are MANY MANY MANY incidents included in this book that have nothing to do with Patton or his immediate world around him. Examples are the chapters included about Auchwitz concentration camp The General and 3rd army never entered Poland or Auchwitz and therefor its reasons for inclusion in this book questioned. Additionally, the story of Anne Frank and her subsequent death are chronicled. Again, Anne Frank and George Patton have nothing in common. Why it is included is again a question.
All of the facts presented in this book are already widely known and readily available. One gets the impression that this book is meant for entertainment and quick sales and not as a historical thesis. Keeping that in mind, this book is recommended for its entertainment value.
If you enjoyed Bill's other Killing books, you will enjoy this book May I suggest to Bill a title for next years book, Killing Hoffa. Id preorder that copy right now.

Published for the very first time, the top-secret report Some Weaknesses in German Strategy and Organisation 1933-1945 was prepared by Whitehall's highest intelligence body, the Joint Intelligence Committee, and presented to Britain's Chiefs of Staff in 1946 to "set down certain aspects of the War whilst there are still sources available who were closely connected with the events described". Paul Winter sets this unique and important document in its historical setting, providing biographies of key figures referenced in the report and a timeline of the crucial events of the Second World War.

Linguistics, the study of language, has a reputation for being complex and inaccessible. But here's a secret: There's a lot that's quirky and intriguing about how human language works-and much of it is downright fun to learn about. But with so many potential avenues of exploration, it can often seem daunting to try to understand it. Where does one even start?

Professor McWhorter is FANTASTIC to listen to. I would give him 7 stars for performance but Audible only allows a maximum of 5 stars. The delivery and style are exhilarating. Just the right blend of wit adds to this wonderful listen. Don.t take my word for it, listen to the sample.
Where I fault the series is that way too much information is presented here for the introductory course. I did manage to totally enjoy this listen even though I felt at times over my head.

World War II redrew the map of the world. No longer would Europe be the center of power. As the continent exhausted itself in yet another war, two new nations with conflicting ideologies were rising to prominence: the United States of America and the Soviet Union. Both nations would eventually fight on the same side in World War II, but they would not emerge as partners.

There are so many bad points, where to begin ....
This is a five hour audiobook but way too much time is spent on WWI (over 1 hour)
Generals like Omar Bradley, Douglas MacArthur, and Sir Bernard Law Montgomery are hardly even mentioned
Many instances of historically incorrect information.
Many battles ( Market Garden, Kursk, Monte Casino and alot more ) aren't mentioned
Need I saw more?
I bought this audiobook mostly because of George C. Scott however, the performance was dry and fast paced making the audiobook very boring to listen to.
There are many books out there on WWII far better then this one.
Do yourself a favor and check them out before buying this one
