Story
Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they’ve rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple—it’s their house, and they’ve arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area—with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service—it’s hard to know what to believe.

I really love Haig’s perspectives.

He is such a good writer for these bizarre and troubled times. Though his stories typically are redemptive- this one is particularly so. I don’t want to talk about the story so as to not spoil it, but his prose is lovely as always and he finds beauty in the mundane - very similar to ‘The Humans’ in that way. So credit worthy.

Story
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous–and most revered–doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

This is a fantastic read. I expected dry- this isn't it. I love that he doesn't overly "dumb down" any speech. The story is incredible- he's lived a really intensely industrious and service oriented life. The only tiny criticism I have is that his speech is quite slow- but listening at 1.2 speed solves the issue! Recommend 100%!!

Like Rachel Maddow, I disagree with Liz Cheney on just about every possible policy and viewpoint, but this book and Liz Cheney’s frank discussion of right versus wrong takes me back to when republicans weren’t crazy, stood for policy and were rational. In short, I still disagree with her on abortion, commerce, taxes, you name it- and she was real late coming to the table in supporting her gay sister’s right to be a human - but she has love of her country, rule of law, and the constitution. We have that in common. Well done.

When a magazine reporter is tasked with writing a story about the Hotel Chelsea's never-ending renovations, he befriends some of the hotel's eccentric characters. Loved this book- well- it took a minute to get rolling- but then it was super good. Until the last 50 minutes. What in the entire? Just. No. It’s like having a wonderful dinner with what sounds like a perfect crème brûlée for dessert, but then there’s a cockroach halfway through the brûlée. No thanks.

This is GREAT. Liz is hilarious and acts as more of a journalist or storyteller rather than a podcaster. That said, I. Love. Her!! If you like skeery stories and approachable fun podcasts- this is for you. I actually downloaded her novella before this podcast- all are terrific- good for you, Liz!

Story
An utterly unsentimental journey toward the end of life, Mala is an irreverent exploration of how we live, cope, and survive in the moment. Grounded in Lopez’s distinctive emotional language and sharp humor, this powerful one-woman show dances between doctors and urgent 911 calls, a mother’s growing frailty, and a daughter’s quest for grace - all set during an epic Boston winter. Rather than depict a “right way”, the play opens the door for our universal struggle to support those we love in dying, especially when all we’ve ever focused on is surviving.

So goodness sakes. This isn’t my cup of tea. A bunch of build up for tawdry ridiculousness. Grisham has always been a talented writer- god knows that I certainly couldn’t write a book- but this story, the vapors and megrims throughout, and, sadly the disconnected and stilted style almost is like someone was trying to write a John Grisham book and doing a poor job of it.
