Story
For DEA Special Agent Marshall Everett, life as he knows it is over once a gunshot wound renders his arm useless. Barred forever from the undercover work he loves, he has nothing - no close friends, no family, no hometown or base, and no desire to settle for life behind a desk. Story
Quiet and aloof rock star Jake McKallister and outspoken, vivacious college student Casey Caldwell are polar opposites: Casey is bubbly and talkative; Jake is reclusive. Casey enjoyed a picturesque childhood; Jake’s childhood could only be described as a well-publicized nightmare. Jake’s life revolves around music, and Casey can’t carry a tune.

Story
For centuries The City of Cries—one of the most desired locales in the Skolian Imperialate—has existed by the thinnest of threads. On the dying world of Raylicon, the “haves” live in great luxury in Cries while the “havenots” scrape by, eking out a marginal existence in the notorious Undercity beneath the desert. Major Bhaajan, formerly of the Pharaoh's Army, knows both worlds. Born into the Undercity, she nevertheless has made a name for herself in the Imperialate. And now, she has the chance to help her people.

Story
No one said it would be easy. No one promised we'd escape unscathed. When Baz, Kirin, and I ventured into the dream realm in search of the sacred Arcana objects, we had no idea what the Dark Arcana had in store for us. No idea that our darkest, most deeply hidden terrors would follow us back home. Now, Baz is haunted by monsters from the past none of us can see, let alone defeat. Kirin is wrestling with a heartbreaking accident that fractured his family a decade ago.

Story
A young man lives among the trees of a primeval forest, raised by a wizened old sage and friend to the faeries and spirits of his home. He bears only half a name—Lien, an ancient word meaning "blade" or "edge"—and no knowledge of his heritage. As he grows, so too does his need for independence and answers. Thus, he begins his adventure, seeking a shattered sword and the truth behind the mysterious mark on his right hand.

Reads like a proposal for an RPG game
Reviewed: 11-07-23
I read through about 1/2 the book before I just couldn't make it any further. If this was my 1st foray into Andrew Rowe, I wouldn't have made it that far and probably wouldn't try his other books.
I love War of Broken Mirrors, Six Sacred Swords, and Arcane Ascension. They are excellent stories with many great characters. Their progression systems and descriptions of the inner workings of magics is all part of the story with little dry exposition.
This book is just about nothing buy dry exposition. Hours and hours of explaining how the magic works and how people develop it, amounting to what could have been a spreadsheet of how a player can influence a character's skill development in a video game. the main character and his fairy friend are also nearly identical to a couple characters in Arcane Ascension. While the acquisition of Deanis points differs from attunements, they function seemingly exactly the same, accumulating magic power until achieving a new rank that comes with perks on the rank.
Additionally, I'll echo what some other reviews have said with how it's disappointing that the story overtly refers to modern-day, real life political stuff. The author may have political leanings, and that's great, but please leave them out of your books. Regardless of the reader's political affiliation, things like this can so easily take someone right out of the story. An example that comes when the main character in this book is visiting his witch friends, you can say a character is whatever gender you want without explaining why said gender is acceptable in the world.

Two women develop a groundbreaking surgery: the Cesarean section. It's a highly dangerous procedure and the research is grueling, but even worse is the vitriolic response from men. Already facing resistance on all sides, Nora is shaken when she meets a patient who will die without the surgery. If the procedure is successful, her work could change the world. But a failure could cost everything: precious lives, Nora's career, and the role women will be allowed to play in medicine.

Seriously compelling. The Surgeon’s Daughter is followed by The Girl in His Shadow. I do hope this is going to be a series. It is clean enough that I can listen to this with my family, but this is not for children. Woman at this time were banned from being doctors in England. In fact, it is dangerous for woman to practice medicine.

I love how I can easily identify who is talking before the character is named. All because the Mark can make such distinct personalities and tones for each one.
I never thought James and Galina would ever be a thing until a few books ago. Heck, back in Home World when she was near permed, he didn'tind, and they only ever treated each other like dirt. But these days, I'm rooting for them. Can they be together even with James's promiscuity and Galina's willingness to get him permed or kicked out of the legion to save face? We can dream.
