Story
It’s 1857, and anxious debutante Beth has just one season to snag a wealthy husband, or she and her mother will be out on the street. But playing the blushing ingenue makes Beth’s skin crawl and she’d rather be anywhere but here. Gwen, on the other hand, is on her fourth season and counting, with absolutely no intention of finding a husband, possibly ever. She figures she has plenty of security as the only daughter of a rakish earl, from whom she’s gotten all her flair, fun, and less-than-proper party games.

Story
LA-based English indie filmmaker Alex Levitin reluctantly takes a job in New Zealand to save the "worst movie ever", Shezan: Mistress of the Forest. Things might go easier for her if she didn't almost run over the standoffish, beautiful local cop on her first day in town. And it'd really help if her film set wasn't being mysteriously sabotaged. When Ika Whenu's Senior Constable Sam Keegan isn't trying to stamp out a motorcycle gang drug problem afflicting her town, she's publicly slamming everything about the exploitative film and the Hollywood blow-ins making it.

This is a tough one for me to review because I can’t quite put my finger on what was missing. To be fair, my rating is only a 4 star in terms of Lee Winter’s books, purely because she has set the bar so high. I love all of her books that I’ve read and even read some of them again here and there, but this one just missed the mark for me. There was just something missing for me. She did her usual phenomenal job of piecing together all of the secondary characters and making you love them as well. And the narrator was off the charts AMAZING! It just wasn’t a favorite of mine, I’m not sure I felt the slow connection being built between the 2 MC’s, that you typically see from a Lee Winter book. I didn’t feel as invested in their outcome as I typically do. Still worth a read for sure though.

Underwhelming
Reviewed: 01-10-25
Honestly confused about all the positive reviews. This was the most mediocre book I’ve purchased in a while. It’s not bad, it’s just super underwhelming. The 2 MC’s never actually connect on anything on a deeper level. It always just seems to be physical attraction. The narrator who voiced Hadrea did a good job, but the narrator for Aurora wasn’t great. I couldn’t tell if it was just really poor microphone quality or she was just always kind of talking with too much spit in her mouth, but it was a little off-putting.

Missed the mark

This book had the potential to be good, possibly even very good and honestly, I can’t tell if it was the writing, the narration, or the two combined, but it just felt silly and I kept catching myself looking to see how much longer until the book was over because I was eager for it to end. The narration in particular was very annoying, sadly. She has a really nice voice, but she used really stupid inflection that either made them sound haughty and spoiled or annoying and childish. I wish I had read it as a regular book to see if the story was more enjoyable that way.

Story
Olivia Sachdeva's life is flawless. With a first from Oxford and as the youngest partner at Bentley lawyers, she expects high standards from everyone. Her only indulgences are eating iced desserts and repeat watching rom-coms, especially those featuring Kate Laurence-pure escapism and cinematic perfection. But, when the actor walks into Olivia's office with a bag full of divorce and a messy personal life, that perfect bubble bursts. Kate seems nothing like the screen goddesses she plays, and Olivia must put aside her comfort viewing and handle the case like the true professional she is.

Least fave so far

The story was good if you just want something that follows a modern fairytale theme but I would have to say it’s my least favorite by this author so far.
I found it hard to become engaged in for the first several chapters. And then rather had to follow at times, where it felt like big milestones passed quickly and you were missing something that led up to that. It was good, just not my fave. As far as narration goes, although I do feel like Abby Craden as a narrator has been feeling burnt into the ground, by how she narrates sooooo many stories; I will say this was some of my favorite work by here so far! She really did a great job of painting an image of so many personalities/backgro

This is far from my typical genre I’d choose so I was a little skeptical, but I am so glad I took the leap and listened to this!!
It’s mad page turner in audible form. I found myself trying to stay awake longer to listen to it, and often checking to see how much was remaining out of fear when the story would end. I also noticed on several occasions all the hopes I had for the finale or even hopeful sequels. I loved every bit of this book - beginning to end!

At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

Sooooo glad the next chapter has finally been told!
Reviewed: 01-12-20
Amazing story, loved getting the insights of 3 main character who didn’t yet have their own voices in the first book. It divides the chapters between both of June’s daughter -Agnes (Hannah) and her life maturing in Gilead, and baby Nicole (or Holly) growing up in Canada. Then there is the story of Aunt Lydia, read perfectly by Ann Dowd - which finally allows us to grasp her transformation and personal experiences through the years from pre-Gilead to the downfall and her roll in it.
I was so enthralled by this story and it even made me cry at the end. What are you waiting for? READ IT!
