Yet another winner! The intensity of JM’s writings seemed to be deeper this time, or it’s just me & my attachment to the characters? Lol Ray Porter is absolutely phenomenal as usual. He IS Joe.

In the war-ravaged borderlands of Ukraine, a Russian mercenary unit has gone rogue. Its members, conscripted from the worst prisons and mental asylums across Russia, are the most criminally violent, psychologically dangerous combatants to ever set foot upon the modern battlefield. With all attention focused on the frontlines, they have pushed deeper into the interior to wage a campaign of unspeakable barbarity. As they move from village to village, committing horrific war crimes, they meet little resistance as all able-bodied men are off fighting the war.

I enjoyed the first of this new series. But I think it may have been better if done by a more experienced narrator. It felt like listening to someone “reading a book” vs actually narrating it. Big difference. Hoping for a change in book 2.

The terms are simple: Rapp agrees to leave the country and stay in plain sight for as long as Cook controls the White House. In exchange, the administration agrees not to make any moves against him. This fragile détente holds until Cook’s power-hungry security adviser convinces him that Rapp has no intention of honoring their agreement. To put him on the defensive, they leak the identity of his partner, Claudia Gould.

Very different

Having just finished this, I am struggling to find the correct way to describe this. It’s not like any of the previous In the Mitch Rapp series. It’s a bit bizarre in the directions it took. I missed the action, the interaction of the team, even the CIA offices. Irene’s role never worked for me in this one. I guess what I’m thinking is- don’t expect the usual Mitch or the guys here. Luckily George Guidall brings that familiarity to it.

Much more intense
Reviewed: 02-10-22
I really enjoy this series and always anxiously await the next one. I adore the character Tommy and had hoped for more of him in this book. The small bits were a tease lol.
The emotional factor and intensity of action were much higher throughout. The humor was also a bit more frequent and is great. I don’t usually LOL but I did here.
I’m not at all happy with the ending, it’s too much of a cliffhanger. Not having any idea when the next one will be out leaves a bitter taste. I won’t share details to ruin it for others but I actually found myself to be angry knowing that it’ll be “forever” for resolution.
Sadly- I’ll forget all about it by then and it won’t have my rapt interest as it does in this moment.

But…not so much. I was too comfortably into the story that I absolutely did not see the Mike twist toward the end.

Another great one

At the end of the previous book, Rage, the twist at the end actually “took my breath away “. I was stunned. And I was beyond anxious to get to the next in the series because- what happened?! Joe’s family could not all be gone! What a long wait it felt like to get to this one.
As always Ray Porter IS Joe. He IS Church, & Toys, & Bug, & Top and on and on. He is oh so talented.
I enjoyed this book as I’ve enjoyed the series. It takes a different turn, focusing on Joe’s “solo” trek. I found that I really missed the team scenes. The humor and interaction that would lighten the mood a bit from those aspects of the story is an important part that I was hoping to find. This is far more intense of a story. It also felt as though there may have been just a few too many different locations/scenes etc so it was missing consistency. But overall it was another winner from JM and RP.

I’ve enjoyed this series so much. This was definitely an incredible addition. X really grows so much throughout this- trying to become “normal”.
I truly enjoyed the interactions with X & Joey and always love Tommy. I was a bit surprised that I LOL
Given the intensity of the storyline it was fun.
I was disappointed in Scott Brick’s narration this time. It sounded like some of his earlier readings. His characters are great as usual (Tommy!). But his overly loud/emotional voice appear inappropriately.
At times it just doesn’t fit. Given that SB is so experienced it’s surprising & disappointing. At one point it almost ruined the book for me but it seems he would “settle” and he had more control.
If it weren’t such a good story I would likely not have continued.
