This is such a great book. I couldn’t put it down. It is the story of becoming your own person through adversity and pain. It’s about drawing boundaries without blame or shame and becoming mighty because of them.

These stories are essential to moving forward for all those affected. We need to change the culture of abuse and the culture of protection for those abusers. We need to change the culture of victim blaming and not believing. Great book. Well written well narrated. Highly recommend.

Story
Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, treating men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias in time, money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates the shocking root cause of gender inequality and research in Invisible Women.

Story
In The Worst of You, just-wed architects Timo and Nia flee a murder scene, setting in motion a chain reaction of lies and betrayals that threaten to unravel everything they have built together. Twisted and propulsive, this thriller is told from the alternating perspectives of the couple and those close to them on Williwaw Island, each with their own motive to use the outcome of the murder case to their advantage. When a huge storm sweeps up the coast, trapping everyone on tiny Williwaw Island, it’s a race against time—and the elements — to stop the murderer from striking again.

Inconsistent throughout
Reviewed: 08-06-24
I like a good mystery. This was nothing like one. The character development was shaky. The characters were developed and then suddenly, without event or cause they would behave against their own character. The writing wasn’t congruent with known facts throughout which made it unbelievable. Also the author contradicted her own writing on several occasions. For instance a character quickly scaled a retention wall. Later, as a car was getting close to the same wall it was described as 100 feet tall. However, the most unnerving part of the book was the narrator. She mispronounced words in ways I’ve never heard before or imagined them to be pronounced. On one occasion I actually didn’t even understand what she was trying so say. Eczema pronounced like Noxema? Her voices and accents hurt my head. I was surprised at how many four star reviews there were until I read some of them. The reviews were barely in English. I honestly shouldn’t have finished it.

From the creator of the critically acclaimed Irish History Podcast comes a ground-breaking exploration of the past, casting its gaze beyond the chambers of power and carnage of battle, and into the lives of the everyday people that lived through those violent centuries. From the desperate retributions of the Land War of the nineteenth century, through the unprecedented tumult of the revolutionary years, to the causes that helped to shape contemporary Ireland, these previously overlooked cases of human tragedy offer a fresh perspective on a history we think we know.

I have been listening to Fin’s Irish History Podcast and I was so sad when I caught up with all the episodes and had nothing else to listen to by him, until I remembered that I bought his book for just this event and it did not disappoint. Great storytelling style, great voice and inflection. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Can’t wait for another.

Story
The Great Hunger is the story of one of the worst disasters in world history: the Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s. Within five years, one million people died of starvation. Emigrants by the hundreds of thousands sailed for America and Canada in small, ill-equipped, dangerously unsanitary ships. Some ships never arrived; those that did carried passengers already infected with and often dying of typhus. The Irish who managed to reach the United States alive had little or no money....

Honest assessment
Reviewed: 05-07-24
I have already read this once as a young person. There is so much information I could read/listen to this again and again. Very honest account of the mistakes and causes of this horrific event of Irish history. The narrator was good, well spoken, although it took a little to get through his very haughty English accent. The thing that irritated me the most was his complete inability to properly pronounce Irish place names. It was so off that there were a couple towns which I truly could not decipher due to his atrocious pronunciation. There were others that were obvious because he was saying them phonetically like Achill. But honestly if you are going to read a ten hour book about Ireland, for the love of all that is good and holy could you ASK SOMEONE how the words are pronounced? I mean truly it was quite annoying.

Story
This haunting, harrowing, gloriously moving recollection of a life on the American margin is the story of Rick Bragg, who grew up dirt-poor in northeastern Alabama, seemingly destined for either the cotton mills or the penitentiary, and instead became a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The New York Times. It is the story of Bragg's father, a hard-drinking man with a murderous temper and the habit of running out on the people who needed him most.
