About this listen

For the first time, discover the unedited truth about the Duggars, the traditional Christian family that captivated the nation on TLC’s hit show 19 Kids and Counting. Jill Duggar and her husband Derick are finally ready to share their story, revealing the secrets, manipulation, and intimidation behind the show in this “no-holds barred” (People) instant New York Times bestseller.

Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines. She didn’t protest the strict model of patriarchy that her family followed, which declares that men are superior, that women are expected to be wives and mothers and are discouraged from attaining a higher education, and that parental authority over their children continues well into adulthood, even once they are married.

But as Jill got older, married Derick, and they embarked on their own lives, the red flags became too obvious to ignore.

For as long as they could, Jill and Derick tried to be obedient family members—but now they’re raising a family of their own, and they’re done with the secrets. Thanks to time, tears, therapy, and blessings from God, they have the strength to share their journey. Theirs is a “complicated, remarkably relatable story of faith and family loyalty” (Salon) and a moving example of how to find healing through honesty.

Enlightening

This book is very well written. It opens your mind and heart to empathize with others, and open the door for self reflection as well. I was so touched with her realization at the end of the book and to accept that not everything is good or bad, but can be both at the same time.

Very impressed

I have followed this family for years and deconstructed as well. She gave a honest and probably too fair of a summary of her experiences. Well done.

Inspiring and truthful

Jill was vulnerable, tactful, and truthful. She vulnerably shared her story and she didn’t shy away when she felt she should own an area she messed up. She brought you into her story without defaming her family. She spoke the truth in a loving way. I’m proud of her. Derick has shown to be such a great husband, supporter, and leader. Finally Jill’s voice has been heard.

A story of vulnerability

My mom was a huge fan of the Duggar family show, and I watched several episodes with her. Over time, I found comfort in the shows love of family and traditional values myself. But... I didn't like Jill that much. She seemed shallow.... not unkind or materialistic.... just that she lacked depth. And hearing her story from her own lips, it all makes sense. She was hiding who she truly was, what she was truly feeling in order to please everyone.

The story starts off slow, and I wasn't sure I wanted to finish it. But since there were so many good reviews, I gave it more time. im glad I did. Jill did a good job of painting a picture of her life from a young girl to becoming an adult. In some way, parts of her story resonate with me and my own upbringing. I shed a few tears at times... especially in regard to her family prioritizing shielding Josh, instead of protecting his victims, Jim Bob and Michelle's own daughters.

I want Jill to know, if she ever reads this, I think you are an incredibly brave woman. I understand what it is like to grow up believing you have to protect your family, even if it means hiding the truth at your own demise. At the risk of losing people you love. And even if your family feels betrayed, you have a right to your own voice and to tell your own story, to speak the truth in love. I believe you did just that. I am so proud of you!

I want to hug her!

The emotion you can hear in her voice while she relives the stories is real. The amount that TLC left out of her story makes me wish I would have never watched it in the first place.
