Story
Now that news of Horus' treachery is in the open, a time of testing has come. Some Legions have already declared their allegiance to the Warmaster while the loyalty of others lies firmly with the Emperor. As Horus deploys his forces, loyalist Astartes learn that a massive Wordbearers fleet is heading to Ultramar, home of the Ultramarines. Unless they can intercept the fleet, and destroy the mighty battleship that has been sent to reinforce it, the Ultramarines may suffer a blow from which they will never recover.

Out of options, Ufthak leads his Waaagh! through the mysterious webway, to a place where kunnin’, sneakin’, and thinkin’ are the name of the game. A place with little truck for muscle and brawn – Commorragh, the Dark City. Here, where kabals and haemonculus covens pump psychic viscera into the warp, Ufthak is thrown into gladiatorial combat and soon finds himself up against an archon who will stop at nothing to prove she deserves to rule the Dark City – even if it means bringing Commorragh down around her.

Long before the coming of the Imperium, the realm of Ultramar was ruled by Roboute Guilliman, the last Battle King of Macragge. Even after learning of his true heritage as a primarch son of the Emperor of Mankind, he strove to expand his domain as efficiently and benevolently as possible, with the XIII Legion Ultramarines as his alone to command.

Theoretical: a Primarch book! Should be great! Practical: Orcs like atomic BBQ. Repeated verbiage is not entertaining. Lacks focus IMHO.

Story
Ahriman, greatest sorcerer of the Thousand Sons and architect of the Rubric that laid his Legion low, continues to walk the path towards salvation, or damnation. Searching for a cure for his Legion, he is forced to consider - was the great ritual somehow flawed from the very beginning? The answer may lie within the mysterious artefact known as the Athenaeum of Kalimakus, a grimoire of forgotten knowledge that is reputed to contain the exact words of the lost Book of Magnus...or, perhaps, even a transcription of the primarch’s deepest and most secret thoughts.

IDK, maybe it's just me but this book seemed even more disjointed than the last. I had a really hard time following the arc other than the end goal, which was also shady. Speaking of, I have to agree with a poster from book1, the voice profile selected for Ahriman was a terrible choice, he sounds like a seedy snake-oil salesman vs. one of the most powerful beings in the Warhammer universe. Also, it feels like physically can barely lift a cup of tea, he's an Astarte for crying out loud and after Magnus, the most powerful being in the Thousand Sons. It just seems the story here could have been much better and a better voice profile IMHO.

I've listened to the entire Eisenhorn & Ravenor series--all exceptional. My only complaint (hence 4-star) is Bequin's constant petty judging of both Eisenhorn & Ravenor. It's almost like she shifts into dimwit mode...me...me...me. I'm still trying to figure out how she shifts from student to galactic Inquisitor savant. hmmm. The audiobook overall though is really super good and IMHO better than Book1.

Reviewed: 01-03-21
For those seeking new horror The Red Son is definitely worth your time. The dark quest for virtuoso is mind bending. Caveat here that I've listed to the original podcast and my view of the book might be a bit biased. It took me until Chapter 3 before I accepted the voice of the narrator because the podcast featured the author and his brother--they're really good. What sets this apart is the world of Maeltopia, a very dark and hellish world. Details are richly described and the environment is absolutely nightmarish. I would have liked to had a bit more detail and story on some of the unique characters: e..g., Lefty. Perhaps just being selfish here as many of the characters are worthy of their own short stories aside from the Family Man. Overall an excellent listen and look forward to Vol. II.

Story
What makes good people do bad things? How can moral people be seduced to act immorally? Where is the line separating good from evil, and who is in danger of crossing it? Social psychologist Philip Zimbardo has the answers. He explains how - and the myriad reasons why - we are all susceptible to the lure of "the dark side". Drawing on examples from history as well as his own trailblazing research, Zimbardo details how situational forces and group dynamics can make monsters out of decent men and women.

A struggle
Reviewed: 01-03-21
While I think the author strives to help us understand how people and their environments can lead to a worsening cascade of wrongful behaviors, after 8 hours into the book it's very hard to keep going. One other reviewer said it best: "it drones on, and on, and on." I stopped at the point when the author relayed how shocked he was that at the first mock parole hearing the individuals didn't just leave. How does a trained psychologist not understand the sheer power he was perceived as having and how gullible the young prisoners were. Dude, that right there bordered on unethical practice on your part IMHO. While I appreciate the effort, I'm lost in the minutiae.
