Main character is VERY immature. Good story, but she is SO irritating.
Reviewed: 02-18-25
I liked the story, but the immature nature of this main female character is a bit much for me… like she never moved beyond 7th grade insecurities. Xe Sands makes her sound even worse with that whiny voice. Just tell the story.

Story
Lillie Silva knew life as an empty nester would be hard after her only child left for college, but when her husband abruptly dumps her for another woman just as her son leaves, her world comes crashing down. Besides the fact that this announcement is a complete surprise (to say the least), what shocks Lillie most is that she isn't...heartbroken. She's furious. Lillie has loved her life on Cape Cod, but as a mother, wife and nurse-midwife, she's used to caring for other people...not taking care of herself.

I super enjoyed this book. Sometimes the voice of Xe Sands comes off as quavering/whiny. I know shes trying to relay emotion, but sometimes it’s too much. Other than that loved it!!!!

The historic houses in the seaside town of Beaufort, North Carolina, have held the secrets of their inhabitants for centuries. One of the most enduring refuses to be washed away by the tide: What happened to Rebecca and Townsend Saint James on that fateful night of their disappearance in 1976? Good story

This was a very heart-felt, touching story. I really enjoy Kristy Woodson Harvey. This was not my favorite of her books. The Peachtree Bluff series was a 10/10 for me. I keep looking for more of that, I guess. I wasn’t wild about the narration of Keaton and I thought Becks was a little presumptive about the neighbor without having the facts. But, that is real life. People judge others based on gossip all the time. It’s sad, but true.
Over all good story, worth the listen. Very good summer read. Look for to more KWH.

Story
Lark Smith has always had a plan for her life: find a fantastic guy, create a marriage as blissful as her parents’, pop out a couple of kids, and build a rewarding career as an oncologist. Things aren’t going so well. For one, the guy didn’t work out. Theoretically, she’d love to find someone else, but it hasn’t happened. Two, she’s just been transferred out of Oncology for being too emotional. (Is it her fault she’s a weeper?) Three, her parents just split up. Deviating from the plan was … well, not in the plan. A potential solution comes from the foul-tempered surgeon Lorenzo Santini.

Great story… but the I just do not like narrative performance. It’s so shaky and “sing-songish.”
Reviewed: 06-07-24
I really like the story. Kristin Higgins writes a great story, The narration is a turn off. She reads in a sing-song voice and it’s hard to understand; it’s frustrating. I get that this character is “emotional” (kind of too much - I don’t think it would feel that way if the narrator would just read it)… but the whole shaky-crying voice is annoying.

Story
A satisfying tale of honor, chance, and star-crossed love infused with Southern wit, grace, and charm - the story of two old Southern families. The Langleys have more money than the Morgan Stanley Bank. And they think they have more class. The Barrett family made their 19th-century fortune in a less distinguished manner: corner grocery stores and liquor stores.

Good story line.
Reviewed: 02-03-24
The story line was good… though I must say sometimes it’s dragged out with too much fluff. I don’t feel like everything gets addressed before the book ends. I don’t care for the narrator… she makes me not like Mae. She makes her sound old and frail and I know she isn’t. She couldn’t do all the things she does if she were that frail.

But suddenly, that way of life looks very much in danger. On what was supposed to be a happy day—the day her boyfriend Dominic gets down on one knee and asks her to marry him—Mae discovers that a collective of out-of-towners with bad motives intends to usurp her business by building a competing hotel right down the street.

This book just irritated me - plain and simple.
Reviewed: 02-03-24
I’ve liked these books, I like Grace Palmer. I DO NOT LIKE THIS NARRATOR. She makes everyone just sound gloomy and old. There is no lightness in her voice at all. Everything sounds stoic and blah. Narration takes away from these books. I’ve liked these characters until now. The whole thing with Eliza and depression. It drug out and the way the narrator said “piillllsssss” over and over was too much… like she was doing hard drugs. My gosh, address the issue. The woman has postpartum/depression and needs help. Stop running from it and bring it out in the story. Yet it’s portrayed as some secret, shameful thing. Taking a pill for depression is not some dirty secret. “The Pilllllsssss.” That really got too me. Sarah being so naive - come on meet your business partners before you go signing your life away. Mae - so naive. I’m like can someone in this family get their head out of the sand for just a minute and take care of things. I don’t know… it just seemed too whiny. I know it’s supposed to portray strong women by showing their trials and how they stick together, but it doesn’t work for me. They come across as just weak women. Author kept dragging things out with every character. Leave out all those details describing every little scene. It just seemed like fluff. You can’t win them all… I’ll try another one, but I had to listen to part of this one on fast forward because it got in my nerves so much. It was just a combination of a lot of things.

Can’t believe it will be her last or so I’ve heard. Maybe take a break, but don’t quit. I feel like I know this town full of people and now they’re just going to be gone.
I do wish this book had a view into the future for the characters … an epilogue or whatever. Great beach read. Well thought out. A 10. I enjoyed it very much.

Story
Elegant Kate, walking a tightrope over an abyss of lies...sensitive, sensible, self-contained Cecie...Ginger, the heiress, sexy, vibrant, richer than sin...and poor, hopeless, brilliant Fig. They came together as sorority sisters on a Southern campus in the '60s. Four young women bound by rare, blinding early friendship, they spent two idyllic spring breaks at Nags Head, North Carolina, the isolated strip of barrier islands where grand old weather-beaten houses perch defiantly on the edge of a storm-tossed sea.

This was overall a good book. I got aggravated with the lengthy details about sorority girls, their lives, the silliness, etc. but once I got past some of that and I could see a plot forming, I enjoyed it. It’s worth the read.
