About this listen
Elegant Kate, walking a tightrope over an abyss of lies...sensitive, sensible, self-contained Cecie...Ginger, the heiress, sexy, vibrant, richer than sin...and poor, hopeless, brilliant Fig. They came together as sorority sisters on a Southern campus in the '60s. Four young women bound by rare, blinding early friendship, they spent two idyllic spring breaks at Nags Head, North Carolina, the isolated strip of barrier islands where grand old weather-beaten houses perch defiantly on the edge of a storm-tossed sea.
Now, 30 years later, they are coming back. They are coming back to recapture the exquisite magic of those early years...to experience again the love, the enthusiasm, the passion, the pain, and the cruel betrayal that shaped the four young girls into women and set them all adrift on the Outer Banks.

Pat Conroy is without doubt America's favorite storyteller, a writer who portrays the anguished truth of the human heart and the painful secrets of families in richly lyrical prose and unforgettable narratives. Now, in Beach Music, he tells of the dark memories that haunt generations, in a story that spans South Carolina and Rome and reaches back into the unutterable terrors of the Holocaust.

In 1943, LSD is synthesized in Basel. Two decades later, a coterie of grad students at Harvard are gradually drawn into the inner circle of renowned psychologist and psychedelic drug enthusiast Timothy Leary. Fitzhugh Loney, a psychology PhD student, and his wife, Joanie, become entranced by the drug’s possibilities such that their “research” becomes less a matter of clinical trials and academic papers and instead turns into a freewheeling exploration of mind expansion, group dynamics, and communal living.

Read the Book and Reread on Audible
I read the book many years ago and loved it so reread one Audible and loved it even more, in part due to the outstanding narration.
The characters are quirky and memorable. The closeness of girlfriends in college as they mature is described so well and is relatable.
I’ve read nearly all of Anne Rivers Siddons book and this is in the top three, behind Colony and Faultlines.

Overall good book… I got frustrated with the heavy details…
This was overall a good book. I got aggravated with the lengthy details about sorority girls, their lives, the silliness, etc. but once I got past some of that and I could see a plot forming, I enjoyed it. It’s worth the read.

Rather Depressing Tho Good Storyline
Would you try another book from Anne Rivers Siddons and/or C. J. Critt?
Maybe - I've read others and like them.
What other book might you compare Outer Banks to and why?
Don't know
What about C. J. Critt’s performance did you like?
I read Siddons
Do you think Outer Banks needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No
Any additional comments?
I've never read a book with "cry" "cried" "weep" "wept" so much in one book. The main character, a woman, cries constantly - when she's happy, when she's sad (a lot), when she's depressed (a lot). I kept reading to the end, hoping it would get more uplifting. Didn't. I've always liked Anne Rivers Siddons, but this one.....I don't know.
