Story
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

Story
Marianne Williamson is a best-selling author, a world-renowned teacher, and one of the most important spiritual voices of our time. In Tears to Triumph, she argues that we - as a culture and as individuals - have learned to avoid facing pain. By doing so we are neglecting the spiritual work of healing. Instead of allowing ourselves to embrace our hurt, we numb it, medicate it, dismiss it, or otherwise divert our attention so that we never have to face it.

Marianne Williamson is the Real Deal
Reviewed: 08-16-19
Marianne Williamson gives the interpretation of suffering, spirituality and living a God-informed life that works for me. Her understanding and teaching is more life-giving to me than many of the dogma-driven teachings that emphasize a God who is focused on punishment and domination. This book came at a time in my life when I had lost faith and was suffering. I’ve listened to it several times and at some point, it really clicked. I find her energy and voice soothing, very easy to listen to; the integrity of her own sufffering and her humanity shines through.

Story
In Tokyo, 16-year-old Nao has decided there's only one escape from her aching loneliness and her classmates' bullying. But before she ends it all, Nao first plans to document the life of her great grandmother, a Buddhist nun who's lived more than a century. A diary is Nao's only solace—and will touch lives in ways she can scarcely imagine. Across the Pacific, we meet Ruth, a novelist living on a remote island who discovers a collection of artifacts washed ashore in a Hello Kitty lunchbox - possibly debris from the devastating 2011 tsunami.

I loved this story and didn’t want it to end, much like the character reading the diary within. The author’s narration gave the characters a depth and nuance that enchanted me, drew me in. I appreciated the deep life wisdom threaded throughout. Thank you. This is truly a life-changing story for me.

Story
In My Stroke of Insight, Taylor shares her unique perspective on the brain and its capacity for recovery, and the sense of omniscient understanding she gained from this unusual and inspiring voyage out of the abyss of a wounded brain. It would take eight years for Taylor to heal completely. Because of her knowledge of how the brain works, her respect for the cells composing her human form, and most of all an amazing mother, Taylor completely repaired her mind and recalibrated her understanding of the world.

Intelligent and Vulnerable
Reviewed: 08-24-12
This is one of the most inspiring stories I've ever heard. Immediately after my first listen to the entire book, I found myself going back to different parts of her story to hear it again.
Dr. Jill is intelligent and vulnerable, practical and transparent, credible and playful about how her stroke impacted her on every level - mental, emotional, physical and spiritual. I enjoy her easy-going yet authoritative storytelling style. I learned of Dr Jill through the TED talk she did a few years ago. This moved me, as it did millions of other viewers. The audio book goes into much more detail.
I'm an amateur brain science and human behavior geek so I was fascinated by her explanation of how our brain impacts virtually everything we experience as humans. I was delighted to listen to her explanation of how the brain helps shape our experience of spirit, as well as our ability to consciously choose how to use and train our brain. The distinctions between the left brain and right brain functions helped me understand myself and others with a lot more compassion and curiosity.
It was very courageous of her to write this book. With so much emphasis and importance given to the left brain in western society, she gives credibility to the right brain and creates a strong case for why we need more right brain awareness. Without making either the left brain or right brain "wrong" she helped me understand how to use my brain more consciously and with more compassion.
Thank you for this inspiring, intelligent and loving book! I feel so grateful to have heard this story.

Awesome Book - Clear and Engaging, Expert Advice
Reviewed: 04-01-12
This is one of the best personal development books I've ever read/listened to and as an executive leadership coach, I've read hundreds!
The author's presentation of the material is clear and very easy to follow. He uses many examples and stories to support his teaching points. I found the material and his performance engaging and I felt prepared to begin implementing the basics after the first chapter. The Yes-No-Yes formula was so helpful without being formulaic.
I recommend this book wholeheartedly to anyone who wants to clarify their "yeses" and "nos" and do it in a way that is constructive for everyone involved.
If you find yourself feeling guilty or afraid to say no when you want to, listen to this book! It will help you find the words and the way to say No with power and clarity while still maintaining your relationships.
This is great advice, not just about saying yes or no in negotiating individual situations but also helpful in clarifying what we say Yes and No to in Life overall. Knowing how and what to say Yes and No to, with dignity and personal power, can redefine our lives!
