Me, Myself, and I: An Anchor For Introspection
Reviewed: 09-09-22
Even though a person's mind is his or her own, it is one of the most likely places to get lost. Introspection (meditation) is valuable but it can seem nebulous, confusing, and even shifty at times. To observe oneself in the mirror during meditation is something we all probably should have thought of, but didn't. What a refreshing episode!

Story
Making sense of sound is one of the hardest jobs we ask our brains to do. In Of Sound Mind, Nina Kraus examines the partnership of sound and brain, showing for the first time that the processing of sound drives many of the brain's core functions. Our hearing is always on - we can't close our ears the way we close our eyes - and yet we can ignore sounds that are unimportant. We don't just hear; we engage with sounds. Kraus explores what goes on in our brains when we hear a word - or a chord, or a meow, or a screech.

Story
A Hidden Wholeness is a thoughtful and heartfelt examination of sources and consequences of the alienation we feel when our inner and outer lives become divorced from each other, when external forces pressure us to depart from our soul's true yearnings. The book lifts up the problem of the "divided life", diagnoses its sources, assesses its personal and social costs, and offers a model of community that will help people live with greater integrity and wholeness.

Authenticity: Summon within and foster for others
Reviewed: 07-12-21
Parker Palmer's writing is like taking a multivitamin for the first time and feeling more energy during the day. With each book, I've gained a new familiarity with my own self. Vital as the earth must feel when it rains during a drought; like comfort a child feels while relieved as her parent who gently and patiently combs her hair, transforming the child's locks from tangled discomfort to her very own esteemed style. This book laid out nearly explicit instructions for permitting oneself to arise in/from silence, creating a culture where people are allowed to speak so that they may hear what they are saying from a new perspective, and fostering the outward expression of inner peace and hopeful journey (for yourself and others). Highly Recommend.
