Story
Julie Parker’s kids are her greatest gift. Still, she’s not exactly heartbroken when they ask to skip a big Christmas. Her son, Nick, is taking a belated honeymoon with his bride, Blair, while her daughter, Dana, will purge every reminder of the guy who dumped her. Again. Julie feels practically giddy for one-on-one holiday time with Heath, the (much) younger man she’s secretly dating. But her plans go from cozy to chaotic when Nick and Dana plead for Christmas at the family cabin in memory of their late father, Julie’s ex.

I tried to get through this book but gave up half way through. The story and writing is cliche and the narration is painful to listen to.

Story
In Jason Mott’s Hell of a Book, a Black author sets out on a cross-country publicity tour to promote his bestselling novel. That storyline drives Hell of a Book and is the scaffolding of something much larger and more urgent: Mott’s novel also tells the story of Soot, a young Black boy living in a rural town in the recent past, and The Kid, a possibly imaginary child who appears to the author on his tour.

Confusing and cliche
Reviewed: 09-09-24
The story was disjointed and confusing to follow. The writing was simplistic and the narration was grating. I’ve been forcing myself to stick with it but finally, with 4 hours left, I gave up and moved on. Maybe it ends brilliantly? I will likely never find out.

Just really bad

Characters, storylines, dialogue, everything really, are sophomoric and basic. I started it twice, thinking I should give it a second chance. I stopped it twice and deleted it from my device the second time.

Story
Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t. They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends.

Struggled to finish

A painfully boring story about six painfully basic and boring friends. I kept thinking it had to get better, that it couldn’t keep droning on without substance but it did, right to the very end. I’m glad it is over so I can start something new.

Best in the series
Reviewed: 12-02-22
This was, by far, the best book in the series. The story and characters were complex and well developed. I loved the insight into neurodivergent people and loved the way other characters interacted with this character in loving, respectful and normal ways. Such a good listen.

Cute story, easy listen. I liked everything except the narration of the mother who’s accent was a weird mix of a Slavic and Italian. It was like nails on a chalk board. Thankfully the rest of her narration was good.

Story
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

An amazing display of privilege and misogyny
Reviewed: 04-24-21
I’ll admit, Matthew McConaughey has always been a guilty pleasure for me. No more. This book left a greasy unpleasant residue that I feel like I need a shower to get off. While he boasts to be remarkably enlightened, his perspective painted him as a more bloated and aged version of a young arrogant punk. The whole thing was incredibly tone deaf on all fronts.
