I love this book. The way that the MMC and FMC's back stories mix makes the story even better. Killian is controlling and very morally grey. The back story of the FMC character was so raw and understandable. There is happy ending. Definitely would recommend.

I knew this book was a dark romance coming in. And I also knew that there would be dub con. What I did not know was just how much I was going to hate the male main character. I couldn't even get past the last 3 hours of the book. I love dark romances anything HD Carlton, Lana Sky's, Adelaide Forest, and alot more. All of the male main characters in those books were pretty twisted and morally grey. But from the get go the male lead was infuriating. He did not have one redeeming character. The human trafficking thing was a big nope for me. At first I thought oh he's just doing this because he's blind with the need for revenge. But pretty early on the character admits to selling people in the past without remorse. For me after that I couldn't see him as anything but a monster. Then there is the female lead who literally doesn't have a backbone when it's important. And spends most of the time cowering and trying to seem weak and submissive. When that had proven to be ineffective for her. To be fair she is in a really tough situation but it could be a *lot* worse. And she never seems to use any of those benefits to her advantage beyond scouting out the house. She never tries to tell her side of the story beyond the basics. Which if she did I would of helped her to some degree. Or at the very least make her seem like more of a person to her captor. The lack of awareness on both characters parts is annoying.

Unique and compelling

This book/recording is compelling. Kate Simses performance is wonderful. I cannot imagine a better voice for Juliet. And the different voices for other characters are really good. The writing style gives a close look into the main characters mind. The noises and tones are intentional. And add a different flair that is unique. You have to remember reading/listening to this book that Juliet is 17 years old and has been for the majority of her life abused, neglected, and isolated. She has been told she is a monster by everyone. And she has been abandoned. So it makes sense that she would have so much self loathing. It also explains why she is VERY naïve. And most of the other characters surrounding her are all very young and immature. Juliet can be extremely annoying especially her inner monolog. She is far from perfect. But that's what makes her a good character. Through out these books and later in the series her character develops a lot. And she shows more depth. I love the symbolic image of the bird and how it links characters together. Warner and Aaron are not perfect either. And problematic at times. But that makes them feel more real. This book is not suitable for younger audiences I would say it is for older teenagers and up. It has course language and semi steamy scenes. But while it eludes to sex there is no description beyond kissing and some touching. This story combines in my opinion X Men meets dystopian meet love triangle romance with a bit of enemy's to lovers. Which I thoroughly enjoyed. Definitely would recommend this book.
